I had a class set of these books that were falling apart and my students were very excited about the new books. Not only did my current students enjoy the books for the last two weeks of our Greek Mythology/Percy Jackson unit, but future classes will also get to enjoy the books.\r\n\r\nTypically, our Greek Mythology unit lasts about 6 weeks. We have two weeks of Greek mythology overview and then we begin reading Percy Jackson & The Lightning Thief. We read a chapter a day from the book. Students read along using the class set of books. Sometimes students have to finish reading for homework and having access to extra copies of the book for students to take home is super helpful. After each chapter we discussed the events and how the plot was unfolding. Students had quick little comprehension checks with each chapter. Some topics that we focus on in our discussions and activities are how events in the plot develop the story, character development, changes in characters, theme, and citing textual evidence to support claims. \r\n\r\nThe cumulative project varies from year-to-year, but is almost always a group project. This year students made a \"quilt\" out of paper where they had to identify parts of the plot - characters, rising action, climax, conflict, and resolution. Students worked independently on their panel piece(s) and then, assembled the parts as a group. \r\n\r\nEvery year I have non-readers tell me that they loved this book. This year, one student told me that he can't think of a single book that he has ever read in entirety until this one. Putting books into my students' hands is something that brings me joy. Thank you for helping make this possible.","fullyFundedDate":1763231029357,"projectUrl":"project/percy-books/9895125/","projectTitle":"Percy Books","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Neely","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10350253"},{"teacherId":9913248,"projectId":9090711,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous donation for a brand new Welch Allyn thermometer. \r\n\r\nI am the School Nurse and having a new thermometer has provided me with a more accurate assessment tool. No more random papers ending up on the floor of the classroom or hallway nor students spending long periods of time searching through papers crammed in a backpack, locker, or Case-It. They have their notes at their fingertips which serves to help them always be prepared for class. As 6th graders they are beginning to learn the value of organization and your kindness has played a key part in that education! Thank You! Thank You!
