When I was in high school, the movies we watched were limited in scope and lacked diversity. As a result, many students, including myself, found it difficult to connect with the material.\r\n\r\nThrough this project, I hope to change that. Films such as Fences and Glory will not only broaden students' perspectives but also open meaningful conversations that are long overdue. Most importantly, the engagement in my reading intervention class has increased! My students were especially excited for me when I gave them the news about my project being funded.\r\n\r\nThere are some supplies I have yet to use, but I am already planning their effect. Some materials in my project wishlist include non-traditional ELA supplies, such as beakers, wooden bowls, mini spoons, and mason jars. I plan on having a potion-making activity during my \"Romeo and Juliet\" unit. It will tie in to the Friar's actions in act IV, and will be cross-curricular: integrating math and science. Your contributions have made a significant impact on my students, and I am excited to share how these new resources have transformed our learning environment.\r\n\r\nWhen the snacks, fidget toys, and games arrived, my students were thrilled. The snacks have been a game-changer, ensuring that my students are nourished and ready to tackle their lessons with focus and energy. One memorable moment was during a particularly challenging lesson; the students were able to concentrate better and participate more actively after having a nutritious snack.\r\n\r\nThe fidget toys have been incredibly beneficial for students who need to release nervous energy. These tools have helped them stay calm and focused, making it easier for them to engage in their learning. I recall a student who struggled with anxiety finding comfort in using a fidget toy, which allowed them to participate more confidently in class discussions.\r\n\r\nThe games have brought a new level of fun and collaboration to our classroom. They have not only made learning more engaging but also fostered a sense of community and teamwork among the students. One specific project involved using the games to build teamwork skills, and it was wonderful to see students working together, supporting each other, and building strong relationships.\r\n\r\nYour support has created a classroom environment where my students feel cared for, motivated, and excited to learn. The prizes have been a great incentive, encouraging students to stay motivated and strive for excellence in their studies.\r\n\r\nAs we move forward, we are excited to continue using these resources to enhance our current lessons and projects. The next steps for my students include a collaborative project where they will use the games to develop problem-solving skills and teamwork. We are also planning to integrate the fidget toys into our daily routines to help students manage stress and stay focused.\r\n\r\nThank you once again for your generosity. My students recently used them to prepare cookies and cakes, and having quality tools made the process much smoother. The frosting tips were a huge hit during our decorating activity. The students experimented with different designs and were so proud of their creations.\r\n\r\nWe will continue using these supplies in our upcoming lessons as students refine their already-improving culinary skills. I already had bilingual poetry books in Spanish and English, but I did not have other languages. My classroom has students who speak Swahili, Arabic, and Pashto in addition to Spanish. Donors Choose helped me purchase an Arabic-English poetry book and a Pashto-English proverb book so that more of my students could access poetry. The Arabic and Pashto speakers were touched to have their own poetry books to read, and they wanted to take them home to read with their parents. \r\n\r\nStudents were so excited to receive their very own notebooks for writing! They began to personalize the notebooks right away, and they have been proud to share their work with their parents. The small size of the notebooks makes them perfect for students to carry around without adding more weight to their backpacks. Students are eager to share their writing with the community and create artwork for the poems we have been writing.\r\n\r\nOur next step is ambitious: we want to write our own bilingual poetry book with original artwork. I have never taken on a project of this scope, and it is intimidating. What has inspired me to continue the hard work of this project is the support I have received from the community, including Donors Choose. When I get messages of support from people I don't even know, it gives me the strength to keep trying.","fullyFundedDate":1727442211475,"projectUrl":"project/poetry-project/8541038/","projectTitle":"Poetry Project","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Edwards","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9254017_orig.jpg?crop=423,423,x285,y273&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1694892545965","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9254017"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_57472","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":2041,"numTeachers":123,"percentFrplEligible":87,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":7,"percentWhite":14,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":71,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"16.6:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":63.5,"schoolId":57472,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about North High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"North High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/kansas/wichita-public-schools/wichita-north-high-school/57472"}
