They asked every day if the new stuffed anatomy parts had arrived yet. They were eager to pass them around and take out the different parts and read the descriptions. We referenced them and used them in order to remind students of content that is not necessarily easily accessed by just using textbooks or online platforms. These also impacted students by showing them the neurotransmitters involved in mental health, their brains, and the endocrine system which controls the hormones affecting behavior as well!\r\n\r\nThe other mental health related items have been a delight as I use them as incentives for daily tasks. The small gifts, like fidget spinners or sensory items, can really make a student's day. They even offer reminders that teachers and other adults are there to support them outside of just normal classroom content. \r\n\r\nThese are not things that I am able to afford by myself. I frequently hold social/emotional groups with students or meet with them 1:1. When I first received the materials, one student helped me to organize the fidgets, games, and coloring materials. She was so excited to help me, and even this got her talking as she helped group the items on my table. Later that day, I had four separate students come in to check out all the new materials, and they ended up opening up to me about things they had not previously been able to. I believe that having many options for how they could use their hands allowed them the ability to build rapport with me and feel comfortable talking. \r\n\r\nThe speech therapist and I also held three groups where we created calming jars with the plastic jars, glitter, and corn syrup. This activity allowed us to assess how the students would do with general life skills, including self-control, managing their space, and connecting as a group. The students really enjoyed the activity and were able share how they might use a tool like this to help them when they are feeling stressed.\r\n\r\nNext semester I plan to use the pencil bags, stickers, figets, and notepads to create self-care pouches, and do lessons with students in the Study Skills around rest and relaxation. \r\n\r\nWe are all so grateful for the awesome materials you helped us receive, and everyday I see the positive impact they have had on students!","fullyFundedDate":1730389069291,"projectUrl":"project/kids-learn-better-when-theyre-healthy/8874042/","projectTitle":"Kids Learn Better When They're Healthy!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Grobbel","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9802066"},{"teacherId":9789104,"projectId":8852877,"letterContent":"My students are regularly using the materials that I received through this project! Each day they have access to calming sensory toys and fidgets to improve their self-regulation skills and their focus. When the new items were available to them during small group sessions with me, all of my students reacted positively and asked right away to play with the new items. Also, some students asked to keep a fidget for the day or for tests they have coming up and it was such a good feeling to have plenty of fidgets in my space to allow them to borrow or keep one. \r\n\r\nAdditionally, our school has limited our use of the building laminator this year. Therefore, having an in-class laminator has been an absolute lifesaver! As a speech language pathologist, I need my materials to be sturdy and water proof. That way my students with special needs can reuse them across multiple sessions. As you can see in the pictures, I love my new laminator and use it often! \r\n\r\nThank you so much for your donation!
