The new sensory tools, emotional regulation supports, and healthy snacks have made such a meaningful difference in my students' days. The moment they first saw the bean bag, Henry the weighted lap dog, and the sensory items, their faces lit up with curiosity and excitement. It was as if they instantly knew this space was made just for them—a place where they could feel calm, cared for, and capable.\r\n\r\nSince setting up the Calming Corner, it has become one of the most beloved areas in my classroom. I have students with ADHD, ASD, anxiety, grief, and mood disorders and they can all use the space to take mindful breaks, decompress, and find balance when emotions run high. Henry the weighted lap dog has quickly become a classroom favorite—students love to pet him, hold him, and talk through their feelings while they sit in the bean bag. These moments are powerful reminders of how much emotional safety impacts learning.\r\n\r\nBecause of you, my students are learning that it's okay to take a pause, that they can ask for help, and that they have tools to support themselves when things feel overwhelming. This gift has not only improved their ability to regulate emotions but has also created a stronger sense of community in my classroom. My next step is to integrate more reflection activities—journaling, gratitude sharing, and mindfulness exercises—into our daily routines, building on the foundation of emotional awareness that the Calming Corner has provided. Your kindness continues to ripple through our classroom every day, and for that, my students and I are endlessly grateful.","fullyFundedDate":1754071014316,"projectUrl":"project/finding-calm-comfort-and-confidence/9444008/","projectTitle":"Finding Calm, Comfort, and Confidence!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Williams","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10069531"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_19404","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":559,"numTeachers":32,"percentFrplEligible":76,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":38,"percentWhite":38,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":15,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"17.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":78.2,"schoolId":19404,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about West Newton Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"West Newton Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/indiana/msd-of-decatur-twp/west-newton-elementary-school/19404"}
