We utilized these funds to purchase professional development textbooks to improve our reading instructional skills. Our students have typically performed below the state average on our state assessments. Therefore, we implemented this professional development using the book in a book study format to enhance understanding of reading comprehension across grade levels K-5. As we progressed in the book study, we noticed a lack of in-depth questioning provided by teachers and students' lack of inference skills and background knowledge. Although we may not be able to provide students with background knowledge, we can provide the needed skills for teachers to be able to help students interact and deepen their knowledge within a text. Even though our time studying this book was limited this year we look forward to continuing our journey with this text in the fall. After implementation of the strategies we are learning from this study we are seeing an upward trend as our students' scores are now higher than the state average.
