One student was the first to speak up: \"Wait, we get to sit on the FLOOR for class?\" The excitement was immediate and contagious. What had been an empty corner of our classroom suddenly became the most coveted spot in the room.\r\n\r\nOur Current Project: CKLA Knowledge Building Meets Comfort\r\n\r\nWe're currently working through our CKLA (Core Knowledge Language Arts) program, specifically our unit on early American civilizations. The floor table has become our central hub for collaborative discussions and text analysis. Instead of traditional desks, students now gather cross-legged on cushions around the low table, creating an intimate setting that feels more like a cozy learning community than a formal classroom.\r\n\r\nJust yesterday, I watched as one group spread their CKLA readers, vocabulary cards, and discussion sheets across the floor table surface while analyzing primary source documents about ancient civilizations. The physical closeness seemed to spark deeper conversations about complex historical concepts. One student who rarely participated in whole-class discussions was animatedly making connections between ancient and modern societies while leaning forward on his cushion.\r\n\r\nStudent Reactions: Pure Joy and Ownership\r\n\r\nWhen they first saw the materials, the students immediately started planning who would sit where and making suggestions for our \"reading rules.\" They were so invested in taking care of our new space that they created a rotation system to ensure everyone gets cushion time fairly. The ownership they feel over this space has been remarkable - they've taken complete responsibility for maintaining and organizing our comfortable learning zone.\r\n\r\nNext Steps: Deepening Our CKLA Knowledge Building\r\n\r\nWe're building toward our CKLA culminating task where students will create presentations demonstrating their understanding of how ancient civilizations influence modern society. The floor table will serve as our research and collaboration station, where students will organize evidence from multiple CKLA texts, plan their presentations, and work together on their final knowledge demonstrations.\r\nI'm excited to see how this comfortable, collaborative space will influence the depth of their learning as we move into our next CKLA domain. The physical comfort seems to unlock their intellectual comfort too – they're taking bigger risks with their ideas, asking more thoughtful questions, and making deeper connections across the complex texts in our CKLA curriculum.\r\n\r\nThank you for making this transformation possible and for believing in my students!","fullyFundedDate":1746786156859,"projectUrl":"project/classroom-comfort/9141904/","projectTitle":"Classroom Comfort","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Voye","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9493606_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1756425783645","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9493606"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_65408","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":62,"numTeachers":7,"percentFrplEligible":27,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":93,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":1,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"8.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":78.6,"schoolId":65408,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Wayne Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Wayne Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/maine/rsu-38/wayne-elementary-school/65408"}
