Students know they can visit it at any time, no permission or explanation needed. Just last week, I noticed a student quietly take a pad and a pencil during passing period, then smile and return to class visibly more at ease.\r\n\r\nThis level of quiet support has allowed students to meet their personal needs discreetly and with dignity. The bubble gum and party favors have also created a fun, lighthearted touch—something small, but joyful, especially during stressful weeks.\r\n\r\n🧼 Student Reactions\r\n\r\nThe first time I introduced the basket to the class, there was an audible \"Whoa!\" followed by lots of whispered thanks. A few students even came up afterward to privately say how much they appreciated that I thought about things \"they didn't know teachers noticed.\" One student said, \"This means we don't have to be embarrassed anymore if we need it after gym class! Thank you.\"\r\n\r\nIt was a moment of visible relief and appreciation.\r\n\r\n✏️ What's Next for Us\r\n\r\nWe're currently in the middle of a unit that explores voice and identity through writing, and the safe, supportive atmosphere this project helped create has directly impacted students' willingness to open up. Knowing they have what they need—whether that's a pencil or a sense of emotional comfort—has empowered them to take more risks with their writing and participation.\r\n\r\nWe'll continue refilling and refreshing the basket as needs arise, and we've even had a few students volunteer to help organize it weekly. The folders and notebooks are helping students stay on top of their writing projects and assignments, especially during our poetry unit where we're compiling original poems into student-created anthologies. One student even said, \"This feels really comfortable, like we are working but we can also relax!\"—a small comment that spoke volumes. Our new bulletin board has become a visual celebration of who we are—it's filled with photos, student work, and encouraging notes that reflect each student's voice and presence in our classroom. The timer helps us stay focused during writing workshops and transitions, keeping the day flowing smoothly.\r\nLooking ahead, these supplies will continue to support a variety of projects. We're preparing for a Finals, and having a well-stocked, organized classroom makes a huge difference.
