When the ocean carpet, sensory table, and floor cushions first arrived, my students were immediately curious and excited to explore the new space. We spent time together learning what the calming corner is and how it can help our bodies and brains feel ready to learn. Some students were drawn to the textures and colors of the carpet, while others explored the sensory table through scooping and pouring as we practiced using the materials with care and purpose.\r\n\r\nOver the past few weeks, the calming corner has become an important part of our daily routine. It has been a work in progress as students learn when and how to use the space appropriately. With guidance and modeling, students who once needed adult support to regulate their emotions are beginning to independently choose the calming corner as a tool to reset before returning to classroom activities. I have already noticed fewer emotional escalations and smoother transitions back to learning as students build these self regulation skills.\r\n\r\nNext, we will continue to strengthen our social emotional lessons by helping students identify their feelings, choose coping strategies, and reflect on how the calming corner supports them. As students grow more confident, the goal is for this space to help them build independence, self awareness, and emotional control.
