In the past, the students have complained about trying to write on the floor or on their seat and not being able to write neatly. Multiple students\r\nHave expressed their preference to the marker boards over paper and pencil. Also, this helps to reach my goal of avoiding long periods of screen time. Students already have enough screen time with the demands of the daily classroom.\r\n\r\nIn first grade, the students have already been using the marker boards to describe musical terms. We recently learned the musical terms Presto and Largo. The students were able to do a listening activity where they actually wrote out the vocabulary words and displayed them where everyone could see them. We also did this with dynamic markings. \r\nIn third grade, we were able to take a mundane composition activity that I do with the students every year and turn it into the students creating their own work. The students are now not only learning how to create and rhythmic patterns, but they are putting their whiteboards together to create melodic lines that can be played on a xylophone, hand chimes, piano, etc. it is a nice break for the students to use the marker boards instead of their usual paper and pencil.\r\n\r\nSo far, every grade, except for kindergarten has already had an opportunity to use the boards. They love going to get the baggies, opening them up, pulling the stuff out, and what we're going to do next.\r\nIn the future, as we learn pitch names on the treble clef, we will be using the bingo chips to mark what line or space on the staff is the pitch that we are looking for.\r\nAs we learn more musical terms, the first graders will be writing out sets of musical terms on marker boards to describe one piece of music.\r\n\r\nAlso, second grade, first grade, and kindergarten will also be starting to write and draw more pitch and rhythmic passages.\r\nIn the end, music literacy is one of the most important aspects to musical learning.\r\nIf a child can sing, play an instrument, and/or write and describe music, it unlocks the world of creativity that also uses both sides of their brain at the same time!\r\nThere is no better way to do this than the way that has been done forever!
