We received dictionaries, teacher resource workbooks and posters for our classroom. It has been an incredible experience to use these items in my classroom. \r\n\r\nFirst of all, the students are learning how to use an old-fashioned language dictionary and find words translated from spanish to english and english to spanish. Since receiving the books, students have been engaged in the narrative of the Ebola Virus outbreak. We are just finishing reading the first part of the book and have already and the opportunity to explore topics such as the relationships between viruses and their hosts and the impact of human activity on the spread of disease. Furthermore, it has allowed us to examine the characteristics of life, and how viruses differ from living things.\r\nBeyond the core concepts, we have had some engaging discussions about pandemics, vaccine development and availability. Your generosity has made the students in my classroom very happy and excited to read. Reading in my classroom is a bit different than in most, as my room is a special education setting. Most of my students do not like books or the idea of reading, but these new books have changed some of their attitudes.\r\n\r\nOne of my students who really struggles with reading, actually asked to take 2 of our new chapter books home over Christmas break! My older students asked if they could choose the next book they read for their novel study, instead of having me decide. Your donations to our new classroom library is doing wonders for their spirit of learning!\r\n\r\nI have one very young student who loves to look at books and flip pages, so his \"reading\" is during his break where he sits and looks through the books. He will sit for hours if I would let him just flipping through all the cardboard books we received. I am overwhelmed by your generosity and support.
