First, let me say an enthusiastic and heartfelt \"THANK YOU\" to everyone who donated to this project! I hope that, through this letter, I can share why this was important to me and why it has been such a benefit to students already.\r\n\r\nI started the \"Uke Dogs\" (Turlock High Bulldogs Ukulele Club) as an enrichment during our day, inviting any students who were interested in learning how to play ukulele to come. I had about 20 students the first day...and only about 6 ukuleles; my personal ones and a couple that were donated locally. The kids were enthusiastic, but I was feeling bummed because I had so few ukuleles for them to use. About that time, I found out that thanks to \"Giving Tuesday,\" my project had fully funded! Two weeks later, I had twenty brand new ukuleles in the classroom.\r\n\r\nThe first day the kids came in after delivery, they were absolutely amazed! They could not wait to open them up and start tuning them; they understood from me that tuning a new ukulele is a long process, but they were ready for it. That day, I had about 15 students in the room and 12 chose to \"check out\" ukuleles to take them home and keep breaking them in. When they brought them back after the weekend, they were each given a chance to \"name\" their ukuleles. \r\n\r\nEach week we play games like \"Throwing Chords\" and \"Follow the Leader\" to learn and practice new chords. We are currently working on learning, and having fun with, our school's \"Alma Mater,\" and students are suggesting songs we should try and learn as a group. In April, we will be performing as a ukulele choir at our school's arts festival. I have also reached out to our moderate/severe Special Ed teachers about coming into their classes to play for, and with, their students.\r\n\r\nNow, all of that is great, and I hope you can see that part of the impact, but that's not the biggest or best thing to me. It's these kids. There are students who have found there way here, so far, from every grade, ethnicity, social status, etc., and all of them have, I think, already started to benefit in more personal ways as well. I have a couple kids in here who I know are not \"popular\" on campus and who don't have a lot of friends to rely on. In this room during club, they've started building bonds and making friendships. There are kids who come to my room almost every day before school and at lunch, just to meet their new friends and strum a bit, who previously would have been sitting somewhere alone. It's these benefits that I think have the greatest effect on me as a teacher.\r\n\r\nOnce again, thank you so much for your generosity in support of these kids, and thanks for helping this old dog teach (and learn) some new tricks!","fullyFundedDate":1733275431668,"projectUrl":"project/uke-can-do-it/8720889/","projectTitle":"Uke-Can Do It","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. McElroy","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9717540_orig.jpg?crop=1427,1427,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1733324197425","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9717540"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_40335","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":2465,"numTeachers":108,"percentFrplEligible":65,"percentAsian":2,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":27,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":64,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"22.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":91.7,"schoolId":40335,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Turlock High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Turlock High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/turlock-unified-school-district/turlock-high-school/40335"}
