This year's game day turned out to be the best turnout we have ever had, with more students participating enthusiastically and staying longer to engage in the different activities. The energy and excitement were clear from the moment students began arriving. Having access to a wider variety of games created an inviting environment where every student could find something that suited their interests, which in turn helped even the more reserved students feel at ease and willing to join in.\r\n\r\nThroughout the day, students not only played the traditional favorites, but they also discovered new games that many had never tried before. Some students gravitated toward competitive games that required strategy and teamwork, while others enjoyed casual activities that encouraged laughter and fun without pressure. Watching students encourage one another, explain rules, and cheer on their peers showed how the games became more than just entertainment—they were tools for connection. For many, learning how to play a new game meant stepping out of their comfort zone, and doing so alongside classmates made the experience feel safe, inclusive, and rewarding.\r\n\r\nOne of the most significant outcomes of this year's event was the way it brought students together who may not have otherwise interacted. Game day provided the perfect setting for freshmen and sophomores to mingle outside of the classroom environment. Friend groups blended as students paired up for team challenges or partnered with someone new to learn a game. It was inspiring to see shy students smiling and engaging with others, building confidence as they realized they were part of a supportive and welcoming group.\r\n\r\nOn top of that, students were able to meet new friends today, and those friendships are likely to extend far beyond the event itself. High school can often feel overwhelming, especially for freshmen who are adjusting to a brand-new environment and trying to find their place. This event gave them a chance to form connections in a low-stress, fun setting where everyone was included. For sophomores, it provided an opportunity to be leaders and role models, showing the younger students how to participate, get involved, and enjoy the traditions of the school. These interactions are so important because they strengthen our school community, bridging gaps between students of different backgrounds, interests, and social circles.\r\n\r\nThese new connections will carry over into classrooms, hallways, and extracurricular activities. When students recognize familiar faces and feel they have a friend to sit with or talk to, it makes their school experience more positive and supportive. The sense of belonging they developed at game day will help them feel more motivated and comfortable engaging in other school events, clubs, and academic opportunities. For many students, this event may have been the first time they felt truly connected to their peers, and that feeling of inclusion is invaluable.\r\n\r\nOverall, the success of this year's freshmen/sophomore game day demonstrates the importance of providing resources that promote fun, teamwork, and social interaction. These games were not just activities to pass the time—they were bridges that helped students learn, grow, and connect with one another. By investing in opportunities like this, we are investing in the future of our students, giving them tools to build confidence, foster friendships, and create lasting memories. Without a doubt, this year's event has set the bar high for the years to come, and we look forward to continuing the tradition of creating welcoming and meaningful experiences for every student who joins our school community.","fullyFundedDate":1758636472281,"projectUrl":"project/learning-laughing-and-leveling-up/9708297/","projectTitle":"Learning, Laughing, and Leveling Up","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Martinho","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp192507_orig.jpg?crop=1242,1242,x0,y484&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1730926361302","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/smartinho"},{"teacherId":192507,"projectId":9564226,"letterContent":"We just had our second annual senior breakfast day! This would not have happened without your donations. We gathered outside to eat muffins and drink juice, along with play games. I am happy to report that we had double the turn out from last year. Students were enjoying the food provided while meeting new classmates and visiting with those they already knew.\r\n\r\nThese seniors were able to relax and enjoy each other's company without the stress of academics. Many of them walked away with a new friend. So, thank you again for your generosity. Since our school is online, students often come in to work quietly at their own pace, and having access to these snacks has made a noticeable difference. Many will grab a quick snack and water before settling in, which helps them maintain concentration for longer stretches and keeps their energy steady throughout their session. It's a simple addition, but it supports their ability to stay on task and make the most of their time on campus.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the snacks and water available, they were pleasantly surprised. Several immediately commented on how nice it was to have something to eat while working, and a few mentioned that it made the learning space feel more comfortable and welcoming. The variety—especially the trail mix and fruit snacks—was a big hit, and students appreciated being able to choose what worked best for them. This small gesture has shown them that their well-being is valued, and it has helped create a positive, focused atmosphere for independent learning.","fullyFundedDate":1746787047697,"projectUrl":"project/snack-attack/9277724/","projectTitle":"Snack Attack","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Martinho","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp192507_orig.jpg?crop=1242,1242,x0,y484&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1730926361302","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/smartinho"},{"teacherId":192507,"projectId":9179422,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for giving to this project. They are engaging with each other by getting to know their peers, connecting with staff, and participating in various activities. These resources have helped create an environment where students feel comfortable socializing and building relationships. They can now work together and collaborate in fun, interactive ways that support both social and academic growth.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first encountered the materials, they were a bit shy and hesitant, unsure of how to approach them. However, after some time and encouragement, they warmed up, especially when they began playing the jumbo games. The games became an excellent way for students to connect with each other and form new friendships. It was exciting to see how the materials allowed them to meet new peers and break the ice, ultimately leading to more confident social interactions.","fullyFundedDate":1737029340652,"projectUrl":"project/jumbo-fun-big-games-bigger-friendship/9014131/","projectTitle":"Jumbo Fun: Big Games, Bigger Friendships","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Martinho","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp192507_orig.jpg?crop=1242,1242,x0,y484&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1730926361302","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/smartinho"},{"teacherId":192507,"projectId":9002185,"letterContent":"Having cocoa and cookies available for students in grades 9 through 12 created a positive and welcoming environment that fostered both social and academic growth. The casual setting of sharing a warm drink and a treat provided students with an opportunity to relax and engage with their peers in a way that might not have happened during regular classroom hours.\r\n\r\nFor students, the event served as a valuable opportunity to meet new people, allowing them to connect with others they might not have otherwise interacted with. Many students in high school experience feelings of isolation, but the laid-back nature of enjoying cocoa and cookies broke down barriers, creating a sense of community. Students were able to reconnect with old friends and establish new friendships, contributing to a stronger sense of belonging within the school.\r\n\r\nThe social benefits of this event went beyond casual conversations; by offering a moment for informal interaction, students felt more comfortable in their social environment. As a result, they were happier, more engaged, and more motivated in their school life. The interactions that happened in these settings often sparked long-term friendships that supported their overall well-being and engagement in school.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, the next step in building upon this positive social dynamic was to encourage students to network with each other more intentionally. By providing opportunities for students to support one another academically, such as forming study groups or sharing resources, the event served as a springboard for greater collaboration. Creating an atmosphere where students felt comfortable reaching out to others for academic help would foster a stronger sense of teamwork and camaraderie in the school. Additionally, promoting peer mentorship programs gave upperclassmen the opportunity to guide and support younger students, ensuring that students not only formed social connections but also developed a sense of responsibility and accountability towards their peers in their academic pursuits.\r\n\r\nUltimately, this social event, with its emphasis on connection, laid the foundation for stronger peer relationships and academic collaboration, benefiting students both in and out of the classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1734458391282,"projectUrl":"project/cookies-and-cocoa-cafe/9002185/","projectTitle":"Cookies and Cocoa Cafe","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Martinho","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp192507_orig.jpg?crop=1242,1242,x0,y484&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1730926361302","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/smartinho"},{"teacherId":192507,"projectId":8893798,"letterContent":"We used all the food to offer a gathering of seniors, since we are an online school. I saw tears in one parent's eyes because she said it was so nice to see her grandson get to enjoy others his own age.
