I truly appreciate your funding to help my classroom. As I have continued teaching, I've noticed that the students see our stories from our reading curriculum as one off stories- there is no tie to the real world or other stories. By funding this project I am trying to bridge that gap.\r\n\r\nI wanted to show them that the stories selected for our basal reader (curriculum), can be explored more through other books. For example, we read a story called Titaleature, which is a spin off of the fairy tale Rumplelstiltskin. However, very few of my students have read that story, which is why I asked for the classic fairy tale. By reading Rumpelstiltskin first, it helps the students make connections to the one they're required to read for class. Usually the 2 stories, spark a lot of interest, which is where the chapter book, Rump: The (Fairly) True Tale of Rumpelstiltskin comes in. This is a prequel to Rumpelstiltskin, and tells the story of him as a little boy. I have a pair of students reading it together currently. \r\n\r\nAnother example of building the connection between the required school curriculum and student interests is seen throughout the biography unit. The students read about people like Frederick Douglass, Milton Hershey, Jane Addams, Scott & Mark Kelly, Madam CJ Walker, and more. They're hungry to read more about these people's lives, but I just didn't have the materials. Now that I do, my students read the books together during independent reading time, and we have a more in depth discussion about these famous leaders. \r\n\r\nIt's been really nice to offer more reading materials on the topic we're studying. The books have been a huge help in extending student's knowledge about the reading content we were focusing on in our curriculum. They use to have questions that were left un-answered or were referred to a search engine, but now there are significantly less.\r\n\r\nThank you.","fullyFundedDate":1762267666372,"projectUrl":"project/support-for-set-curriculum-stories/9485015/","projectTitle":"Support for Set Curriculum Stories","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Askew","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp2350305_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1458427504733","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/msbrunner"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_80193","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":172,"numTeachers":23,"percentFrplEligible":20,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":91,"percentIndigenous":1,"percentLatinx":3,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"7.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":84.6,"schoolId":80193,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Thornton Central School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Thornton Central School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-hampshire/school-administrative-unit-48/thornton-central-school/80193"}
