Many students signed up for clarinet and flute this year, and while I had the instruments for them, I did not have enough books. Many students were very excited to receive their very own clarinet and flute book to use this year! Because I have our needed amount, students now get to bring these books home and practice. \r\n\r\nI was able to plan ahead with emergency substitute lessons using \"Trombone Shorty\" and \"Before John Was a Jazz Giant.\" These books allow my younger students to explore the world of music beyond the classroom with renowned musicians Trombone Shorty and John Coltrane. \r\n\r\nMy saxophone students were thrilled to receive comfortable neck straps. Before, they had a hard time playing while the previous saxophone strap irritated their necks. Now, they are eager to practice and can play comfortably! \r\n\r\nFinally, my percussionists are overjoyed to have an official bass drum stand. As we prepare for our winter concert, I look forward to showing it off to our community!\r\n\r\nI am so grateful that I have been able to provide these materials to my students in my first year of teaching. The students have also been able to come up and show off what they can do by demonstrating it for others. \r\n I appreciate all that you have done to help make this project a reality. In \"Finding My Dance\" and \"Pow Wow Day\" my students learned about a young indigenous girl who grew up turning to dance to cheer her up. They also learned about our native American community which is so close to home with the Mohegan and Mashantucket Pequot tribal nation being so close. My students shared how they can relate by sharing things that cheer them up when they are sad. Things like singing, reading, playing with friends. We celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with \"Sing With Me - Canta Conmigo\"; \"Feel the Beat\" and \"Mi Ciudad Sings.\" These songs that they knew in English were easy to sing in Spanish because the students already knew the familiar tunes. These books helped students to connect with their feelings while celebrating the art of dance. \"Feel the Beat\"; \"Violet's Music\" and \"Get Up Stand Up\" will be used during Black history month because they have messages of peace and unity. My school mascot is the lion so \"The Lion on the Bus\" and \"Lion Lessons\" were loved by the students because they came up with ways they could earn their Lion diploma and move up to the next grade just by being kind to friends. I have suggested that this be our school book for the start of school next year. I am so grateful to all my donors for your interest in helping my students learn and acquire a love for reading and singing about different cultures through these music books.","fullyFundedDate":1727988677119,"projectUrl":"project/singing-stories-can-be-a-literacy-superp/8846043/","projectTitle":"Singing Stories Can Be a Literacy Superpower","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Scheidel","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9459818"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_44182","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":257,"numTeachers":18,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":21,"percentBlack":10,"percentWhite":31,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":29,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"14.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":53.2,"schoolId":44182,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Thomas W Mahan Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Thomas W Mahan Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/connecticut/norwich-public-schools/thomas-w-mahan-elementary-school/44182"}
