I introduced them through a classroom \"book tasting,\" which is shown in the photos provided. We set up the room like a restaurant, and books were rotated around on trays for them to sample. Students eagerly recorded books they wanted to read later. As they enjoyed reading, they were served popcorn and lemonade. It was a great experience overall, one that we will never forget. \r\n\r\nAt Terry Redlin, many students have significant gaps in their reading abilities. These books have provided them with a variety of reading levels, written about high-interest and relatable topics. We have independent reading time every day after our reading lesson. Most lessons teach reading comprehension strategies, such as questioning, inferring, etc. By having reading time afterward, students get to transfer and practice their new skills. The impact of these new books on their reading comprehension has been significant. Typically it is difficult to teach skills such as inferring because they don't have the personal background knowledge necessary, but since we've received our new books they have been very engaged and can easily relate to personal experiences. \r\n\r\nThe purpose of these texts was to prove to students that they deserve to be represented in our classroom. It was such a joy to see their faces light up when they saw a book that showed their cultures or their language. I heard students telling their peers, \"This one looks like me!\" and \"My family is also from ____.\" For instance, the book Gaawin Gindaaswin Ndaawsii resonated with one of my Native American students who has family members who experienced boarding schools. He was especially excited that it showed the text in both English and Ojibwe. \r\n\r\nSince I've added them to our classroom library, they have been flying off the shelf! Your donation has made such a significant impact on our room, both for students who now get to see themselves and for those who can learn more about others. Thank you so much for your generosity and consideration.","fullyFundedDate":1726682970452,"projectUrl":"project/building-a-culturally-and-linguistically/8484433/","projectTitle":"Building a Culturally and Linguistically Responsive Classroom Library","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Saavedra","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9584979_orig.jpg?crop=3215,3215,x330,y1217&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1720319818224","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9584979"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_92022","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":412,"numTeachers":41,"percentFrplEligible":76,"percentAsian":3,"percentBlack":22,"percentWhite":28,"percentIndigenous":15,"percentLatinx":19,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"10.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":60.2,"schoolId":92022,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Terry Redlin Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Terry Redlin Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/south-dakota/sioux-falls-school-district-49-5/terry-redlin-elementary-school/92022"}
