The kids have been reading books by this author and now have enough copies of Wishtree to have many kids reading in at once. This shared reading inspires conversations about the characters, a plot twist, and what they think will happen next. Best of all, the emotional connection to the story and to each other creates a community of readers with a love of reading. \r\n\r\nHaving a school-wide reading focus book has inspired artwork, such as several trees that adorn the hallways. Kids and teachers are reading other books about trees and learning about trees in science. As an unexpected bonus, we were able to have a virtual visit with the author and she read some of her newest book aloud and told the kids about her writing process. The magnetic bookshelves have been amazing! In the library, our whiteboards weren't used much so I placed the magnetic bookshelves on them to display our award books and the books we are currently reading. This makes them so much more visible and the kids notice them right when they walk in. It also keeps those books from getting mixed up with books the kids can check out. The teachers started noticing and several asked me where I got them. I finally just send the information to the entire teaching staff! \r\n\r\nThe weighted stuffed fox and sloth are adorable and live in our calm corner. When kids need a break, they can go there for some quiet time and do something that calms them. Many kids pick the weighted plush animals to hold and hug. We have lots of ideas for their use this year and anticipate them being available for a different poll question each week.
