I didn't tell them that the film detected magnets. They found magnets in their phones and in their computers. This brought us to the driving question of ,\"Why are there magnets in their phones.\"\r\n\r\nThe students then used the copper wire, batteries and the alligator clips to run electricity through the wire. When there was no electricity the wire would do nothing, but when there was electricity, the wire would act like a weak magnet. Students then used the wire to investigate what would increase the strength to make the electromagnet useful. \r\n\r\nMy students were so excited with the new materials, and it made learning more fun for them. The students actually got to build things instead of just read about them. My students were thrilled to use the new scales and they were so excited that they worked the first time. I had them put in the batteries, and there's something special about being the first group of students opening new supplies. They were so careful and loved not having to use decimals. \r\n\r\nWe have used the scales in a few projects so far. One way the students have used the scales is for their density practical. Students had to find the mass and the volume of different objects and then calculate the density. Another way the they used the scale is during an engineering challenge where they had to protect an icecube using recycled materials. Students found the mass before the ice cube was put in the shelter and after an hour in the shelter. \r\n\r\nThe new scales are perfect and has made measuring so much easier.
