Donors like you help to provide so many enriching and important materials for classroom teachers. \r\n\r\nYour donations for this grant enabled me to purchase several books that I can read aloud when introducing various math skills. Adding literature to math helps to engage and encourage students! Often, math skills are so abstract that students struggle with understanding the concepts. When we can incorporate story with them, it creates a connection that helps students! We have already read about multiplication, and division. This week I will be reading a book about rounding numbers...with dinosaurs! I know the students will love it!\r\n\r\nAgain, thank you so much for your generosity! Your donation helped to supply my classroom with manipulatives we could use in math. \r\n Already this year, we have used buttons, linking cubes, unifix cubes, coins, and counters to make various arrays showing multiplication. I have also used these tools in small groups to help struggling students to count out equal groups as we introduced multiplication.\r\n In the future, we will be able to use our place value blocks as we master adding and subtracting with regrouping. Fraction bars will help us understand fractions. We will use two sided counters as we play partner games.\r\n Having these manipulatives has enabled me to design engaging activities that students love as they are learning. Several times already this year, my students have declared how much they love math now! They asked for days when we were going to get to use it. This past week, an opportunity arrived. We had been reading the classic Kevin Henkes book, \"Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse\", discussing characters, literary elements, and theme. In the story, Lilly loves the cheesy snacks her teacher makes. I found a recipe connected with the story, and on Friday, we used our kitchen to follow a recipe and make our own cheesy snacks!\r\n Students got to practice reading a recipe. They watched as I modeled measuring and blending. They rolled their own cheese snack into a ball, and we placed them on the baking tray in an array. They were able to watch (a few at a time) through the oven glass as the cheese balls changed shape as they cooked. And finally, they were able to taste their own creations! It was two thumbs up all around, and many students wanted to try it again at their house!\r\n Thank you so much for your generosity! I hope to provide impactful cooking experiences once a month for my students, and your donations have made this dream a reality!","fullyFundedDate":1747939176018,"projectUrl":"project/connecting-math-literature-and-life-sk/9302983/","projectTitle":"Connecting Math, Literature, and Life Skills with Baking Experiences!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Harris","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp46524_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1472911642306","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/karinabharris"},{"teacherId":46524,"projectId":8939268,"letterContent":"Whenever we receive materials from wonderful donors like you, it always feels like Christmas in our classroom. This time was no different. We had just begun learning about morphemes (prefixes, root words, and suffixes). The Reading Rod sets were perfect tools to practice building root words and then seeing which prefixes and suffixes we could add to them to create new words. This has created opportunities to discuss new vocabulary as well as cement new learning of morphemes each week.\r\nEvery time I get out these materials, students are excited to come back to the small group table. Rarely do they want to leave when our time is finished. \r\n\r\nI can hardly wait until the beginning of next year, when we can utilize these materials as well with phonics skills and building words by sounds. This is a skill that some students still struggle with in third grade, and I know these will be beneficial even from the start of the school year!\r\n\r\nThank you, again, for your generosity!
