These items will transform our space into a calming, supportive, and engaging environment where students can feel safe, seen, and supported. Each resource has been thoughtfully chosen to meet the diverse emotional, social, and sensory needs of our student population, and together they significantly enhance the effectiveness of our counseling program.\r\n\r\nThe sensory and calming tools—including weighted stuffed animals, weighted lap pads, fidget toys, breathing balls, and kinetic sand—have been especially impactful for students experiencing anxiety, emotional dysregulation, or overstimulation. These tools give students a way to calm their bodies and minds, especially during moments of stress or transition. I often incorporate these items into mindfulness and grounding activities, and I've seen firsthand how they help students re-center and refocus so they can return to class more regulated and ready to learn.\r\n\r\nThe art supplies, including acrylic paints, oil pastels, paintbrushes, origami paper, and coloring books, have opened new doors for creative expression. Many of our students struggle to articulate their feelings with words, but through art, they can process and express emotions in a safe and therapeutic way. We now have dedicated time for art-based SEL activities, and students genuinely look forward to these sessions. It's been powerful to see how creating something with their hands allows them to feel proud, connected, and in control.\r\n\r\nTools such as the CBT and DBT workbooks, therapy cards, and social skills games have become essential components of my individual and small group sessions. These resources offer age-appropriate language and engaging activities that help students develop self-awareness, emotional regulation skills, communication techniques, and resilience. Whether it's working through a coping strategy card deck with a student who's feeling anxious, or playing a mindfulness game to help build self-regulation, these resources provide structure and engagement that make learning SEL skills both fun and meaningful.\r\n\r\nThe addition of comfort items like soft fleece blankets and stuffed animals has helped make the Wellness Center feel more like a safe retreat. These items are especially appreciated by students who have experienced trauma or are facing challenging circumstances at home. Simply having a cozy space to curl up with a blanket or a weighted sloth plush during a tough day has been deeply comforting for many students. It reinforces the idea that the Wellness Center is a space where they can slow down, feel safe, and be themselves.\r\n\r\nThe play-based items such as magnetic tiles, family counters, puzzles, and plush toys allow younger students to process feelings through imaginative and cooperative play. These tools support developmental needs while encouraging communication and social interaction. They're especially useful during sessions with our youngest students, who often process their emotions and experiences more effectively through play than through traditional talk-based counseling.\r\n\r\nEven the aromatherapy oils have added value to the space. I use them sparingly in diffusers to help create a calming atmosphere. Scents like lavender and peppermint can promote relaxation and focus, which enhances the overall experience in the Wellness Center and helps students associate the space with peace and emotional safety.\r\n\r\nTogether, these items have created a Wellness Center that is both functional and inviting—a space where students feel empowered to learn about themselves, build healthy coping skills, and navigate life's challenges with greater resilience. I'm grateful to be able to offer such a robust and thoughtful collection of tools that support the emotional well-being of our students every day.","fullyFundedDate":1744647481090,"projectUrl":"project/emotional-support-tools-for-new-counseli/9252798/","projectTitle":"Emotional Support Tools for New Counseling Office","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Riley Statham","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9840545_orig.jpg?crop=360,360,x0,y30&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1731804469317","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9840545"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_4050","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":268,"numTeachers":14,"percentFrplEligible":10,"percentAsian":36,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":35,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":14,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"19.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":71.4,"schoolId":4050,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Sunol Glen School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Sunol Glen School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/sunol-glen-unified-school-district/sunol-glen-school/4050"}
