The beginning of this story mentions the main character, Opal, and her move to live with her father, leaving behind everything she knew. She does not have any friends in this new location, and is feeling very lonely. Then suddenly this dog appears while she is shopping, and in a desperate attempt for a connection, she decides to keep the dog as her own. I have seen many of my own students cling onto anything just because they are in desperate need of connection, and attention. This story brings this situation to reality. \r\n\r\nAny time we read a novel together as a class, my hopes is that there is a large life lesson hidden somewhere in the pages that my students are able to connect with, but also remember for a long time. With this story, they are able to relate to Opal and watch how she makes her way out of what seemed to be a low, and lonely situation. Instead of giving up, Opal saw an opportunity arise to make a friend, (and friends with her neighbors), and creates her own community. I believe it is important for students to know that students can choose their community, and it is okay to think outside the box when they are feeling stuck.","fullyFundedDate":1746785441257,"projectUrl":"project/because-of-winn-dixie-novel-study/9264737/","projectTitle":"Because of Winn-Dixie Novel Study","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Lawless","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10003359_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1745273339115","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10003359"},{"teacherId":10003359,"projectId":9264104,"letterContent":"I wanted to say once more how grateful I am that you donated to this project and helped make it possible. Last year was my first year teaching, and reading Wonder with my students was more emotional than I was planning. Not many of my students had a physical disability that others noticed and hence they were isolated, but many have been in a situation where they felt like they did not belong. Being the new student (or teacher) anywhere is hard. My students and myself were able to resonate deeply with the pain that Auggie was going through because unfortunately we meet some Julian's in our lifetime, and we must know how to respond to them. \r\n\r\nAfter reading this story with my students, the rest of the year they continued to ask themselves \"what would Summer do?\" or sometimes \"what would Jack Will do?\" They did this as a reminder to be kind, caring, and genuine towards everyone they meet. This story encouraged my students to step out of their comfort zones and invite other students into their circle. Overall, I just loved seeing how one story impacted so many of their lives, and there was not one student who was not excited to read our chapter or two of the day. Thank you, again, for your generosity in supporting a kinder generation of children.","fullyFundedDate":1746785807704,"projectUrl":"project/wonder-novel-study/9264104/","projectTitle":"Wonder Novel Study","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Lawless","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10003359_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1745273339115","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10003359"},{"teacherId":9902322,"projectId":9070914,"letterContent":"We sincerely appreciate your generous donation, which has enabled us to acquire a class set of novels that play a crucial role in fostering a love for reading among our students. As students immerse themselves in the storylines, they develop critical thinking and comprehension abilities that are essential for academic success.
