Students are enhancing language skills and cultural knowledge through the literature. Reading is such an important skill that improves fluency. Many of my students have commented that stories are helping them expand their vocabulary, reflect on grammar rules and work on proper pronunciation. \r\n\r\nThe stories chosen are a little cheeky. This age groups enjoys the challenges the characters get themselves into. It's fun watching them see how to stories unfold. In groups, we have been discussing new vocabulary, describing the characters and voting on where the stories are going with foreshadowing in the books. \r\n\r\nOverall, the experience of reading an entire chapter book in Spanish is new to these students. It is a true confidence boost for most of them. My students have LOVED the alternative seating option, choosing to work with partners at the tabletop. \r\n\r\nWe've used the art supplies for two projects already. The first was to create conflict posters reflecting the literary work we're reading. The second project was to create team name posters for our cooperative groups. \r\n\r\nThe students have also loved the fidget squishies. We have quiet reading time periodically, and students live to grab one as they sit and read. With this project I was able to assist my students with giving them a safe space at school. This is a work in progress as I continually have a need. I give food & snacks to students on a daily basis, this project helped off-set the cost so I can help more students. It also provided for activities that my students use to unwind when they are feeling overwhelmed. And unfortunately, that is the strongest need. More now than ever, students are coming to school stressed out, angry, hungry, and not prepared to learn. I am happy to help them in any small way I can to show them they are cared for. I informed them that these snacks & activities came from donors that do not even know them! That showed them that others do care & that small acts of kindness go a long way.
