We used our resources to look at the anatomy of the squid and earthworm. Two years ago, we dissected frogs and the students thought it was awful because of the smell but they enjoyed dissecting the frog to learn the anatomy and using the dissection kits. After talking to the students, they really wanted to dissect another animal and I felt like they were learn from the experience. I teach three different grades, so each grade got something to dissect. My 8th graders dissected squids, 7th graders owl pellets, and 6th graders earthworms. \r\nDissecting the squids was by far the favorite, among the students. The smell wasn't awful and they got really involved in the process. Their favorite part was pulling out the pen and writing their names with the ink. For my 6th graders, we were learning about circulatory systems and we were able to observe that in the earthworm. We have been revamping our English classes to expose our students to the world. We believe that exposure helps to build empathy, understanding, and compassion which our society needs.\r\n\r\nWe have used the novel sets to improve our reading comprehension, writing skills, and critical thinking. These skills have strengthened the understanding of our peers in hopes that when our students go out into the real world they will carry these traits with them and be able to make the world a better place.
