The materials you funded transformed our Spanish classroom into a colorful celebration of tradition, remembrance, and art. Students used the supplies to design papel picado, paint sugar-skull masks, create marigold flowers, and build mini ofrenda displays honoring their loved ones and cultural icons.\r\n\r\nThe moment students saw the materials, their faces lit up with excitement. Many said, \"¡Qué bonito!\" and asked if they could start creating right away. Some students shared memories of celebrating Día de los Muertos with their families, while others were eager to learn about a tradition new to them. Having real, quality materials gave every student—regardless of background—an opportunity to take part in a meaningful cultural tradition and feel proud of their work.\r\n\r\nOne unforgettable moment was when students wrote heartfelt dedication cards in Spanish for the loved ones they represented on their mini altars. The room was filled with music, quiet reflection, and joy as students connected personally to the project. Classmates walked around admiring one another's creations and asking questions—in Spanish—about who they chose to honor and why. It became not only an art activity, but a celebration of memory, family, and community.\r\n\r\nThese materials allowed students to learn language and culture in a way that felt authentic, emotional, and empowering. Up next, students will use the remaining supplies to continue expanding our classroom cultural displays and create reflective journal pages in Spanish describing their Día de los Muertos experience. They will also engage in a cultural comparison project, examining how different countries honor the lives of loved ones who have passed.\r\n\r\nThank you for helping our students bring culture to life through art, storytelling, and language. Your generosity made it possible for them to connect deeply with their heritage and with each other—creating memories and learning experiences they will carry with them forever.","fullyFundedDate":1761145044924,"projectUrl":"project/bringing-da-de-los-muertos-to-life-thro/9849968/","projectTitle":"Bringing Día de los Muertos to Life Through Art","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Tobar","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9644370"},{"teacherId":9644370,"projectId":9760877,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generous support, our classroom has become a vibrant creative space where language, culture, and art come together every day. With the resources from \"Creating Culture Through Art,\" my Spanish students have been able to explore identity, traditions, and heritage through hands-on artistic expression—all while practicing meaningful communication in Spanish.\r\n\r\nAs soon as the supplies arrived, students' eyes lit up. Many asked, \"¿Podemos empezar hoy?\" (\"Can we start today?\") and immediately gathered around the materials, excited to touch, explore, and imagine. Several students shared that they rarely have access to art supplies at home, so seeing everything available to them—paints, markers, decorative materials, and cultural craft tools—made them feel valued, inspired, and motivated to create.\r\n\r\nOne unforgettable moment happened during our unit on cultural identity. Students used the materials to design mini altars and cultural collages celebrating their families and traditions from places like Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, Korea, and the U.S. As they worked, they shared stories about their grandparents, favorite foods, and important cultural memories. They proudly presented their artwork in Spanish, and many expressed how meaningful it felt to create something that truly reflected who they are.\r\n\r\nThe room was full of pride, laughter, cultural music, and authentic language use—not just learning, but living Spanish through creativity and personal connection.\r\n\r\nThanks to your kindness, my students are now empowered to express their identities, honor their cultures, and build confidence through bilingual communication and artistic storytelling. Up next, we will be working on a community mural project and student-led presentations about cultural celebrations around the world. Students will continue using these materials to design posters, 3D art pieces, and visual narratives that highlight cultural beauty and diversity.\r\n\r\nThank you for believing in my students, their voices, and their cultures. The new resources have transformed our lessons into hands-on, creative, and highly engaging experiences. From day one, my students were filled with excitement—many of them gasped and smiled as they explored the materials and immediately started brainstorming what they could create.\r\n\r\nOne memorable project was our cultural identity unit. Students used the supplies to design visual representations of their cultural heritage and personal stories. They created mini-altars, collages, and identity boards that celebrated their families, traditions, and values. As they worked, they shared stories with their peers and proudly explained the meaning behind their artwork—all in Spanish. The room buzzed with pride, collaboration, and authentic language use.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials arrived, students were genuinely grateful. Several said, \"¿De verdad son para nosotros?\" (\"Are these really for us?\") and handled each resource with care and enthusiasm. Many of my students have limited access to art supplies and creative tools at home, so having these materials in class meant the world to them. They felt seen, supported, and empowered to bring their ideas to life.\r\n\r\nBecause of your kindness, my students are now able to engage in meaningful, creative language projects that build confidence, celebrate culture, and strengthen academic skills. Next, we will use these resources for our upcoming unit on global challenges and community action. Students will be designing bilingual posters and multimedia presentations to raise awareness on topics they are passionate about—such as environmental care, community traditions, and mental wellness.\r\n\r\nThank you for believing in my students and supporting their voices, creativity, and cultural pride. The Elmer's all-purpose glue sticks allowed students to securely assemble the small decorative pieces for their altars, bringing their creative visions to life. The Sharpies were a favorite tool—students used them to outline their artwork, label photos, and add final details that made each altar truly stand out.\r\n\r\nThe hand sanitizers and Kleenex were also greatly appreciated. As students worked with paint and other materials, the sanitizers helped them clean their hands quickly and safely, while the Kleenex came in handy not only for drying their hands but also for those catching seasonal colds during the weather change. When a few students got small cuts from paper or cardboard, the band-aids you provided were right there to help, showing them that even small acts of care make a big difference in the classroom.\r\n\r\nThis project not only allowed my students to learn about a rich cultural tradition but also helped them take pride in their creativity and teamwork. Having access to this resource allowed them to personalize their projects and proudly display their work in Spanish, helping them connect language learning with cultural appreciation.\r\n\r\nThe new bookshelf has transformed our classroom environment by making our Spanish books more accessible. Students now easily find stories and informational texts that deepen their understanding of Hispanic culture and traditions. This has encouraged more independent reading and curiosity about the diverse Spanish-speaking world.\r\n\r\nThe podium has also made a noticeable difference in the flow and delivery of our lessons. It allows me to organize materials efficiently and present lessons more professionally, helping maintain students' attention and engagement. This project, Voices with Power: Identity and Justice in Spanish-Speaking Communities, has provided them with the tools they need to research, reflect, and create work that celebrates powerful Latino/a/x voices across history.\r\n\r\nStudents have been using inspiring books like Sí Se Puede: The Latino Heroes That Changed the United States and Latin Americans in History: 15 Inspiring Latinas and Latinos You Should Know to learn about change makers in Spanish-speaking communities. They've been applying critical thinking as they research and then translate that knowledge into powerful posters and presentations, many of which are displayed throughout our classroom and hallways.\r\n\r\nThe glue sticks helped students put together their research into posters. The electric pencil sharpener has also gotten a lot of use as students sketch, label, and annotate their visuals. For many, the artistic part of the project is just as important as the research as it's where they connect personally and creatively with the material.\r\n\r\nWhat excites students most is the ability to bring their learning to life. They love seeing their work displayed and feel empowered when sharing it with peers. One student who was previously shy has found her voice through her poster on Dolores Huerta.\r\n\r\nThis project has not only supported academic growth but also cultural pride, personal expression, and a stronger sense of identity.
