The impact of this gift has been truly remarkable. Some of the skills and lessons introduced by these new texts include:\r\n\r\nPhonics and Phonemic Awareness: Many of the books feature engaging stories that naturally reinforce phonics skills like letter-sound correspondence and blending sounds. As we read our new books we like to find the phonics patterns we are learning about! \r\n\r\nVocabulary Development: We encounter new and exciting words throughout the stories, expanding our students' vocabulary and comprehension. We love to add new words to our word wall! \r\n\r\nComprehension Strategies: The diverse range of texts encourages the development of key comprehension strategies such as making predictions, summarizing, identifying main characters and events, and inferring meaning. These have helped us grow and make interdisciplinary connections. \r\n \r\nSocial-Emotional Learning (SEL): Several of the new books address important social-emotional concepts like empathy, kindness, and self-regulation, fostering healthy emotional development. This has helped all of my students continue to learn and grow within their SEL skills. \r\n\r\nMulticultural Awareness: The inclusion of multicultural literature has been invaluable. It exposes our students to diverse perspectives and experiences, fostering empathy and understanding among learners of all races and ethnicities. They love seeing themselves reflected in the stories and learning about the rich tapestry of human experiences.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is a vibrant and engaging experience. We implement a variety of approaches, including:\r\n\r\nIndependent Reading: Students have dedicated time for independent reading, choosing books that interest them from our diverse library. They love getting to read new books, many they have never seen before. \r\n\r\nPartner Reading: Students engage in partner reading activities, taking turns reading aloud and discussing the text. They get to use this to not only share their knowledge but cultures too. \r\n\r\nGuided Reading: I conduct small-group guided reading sessions, providing differentiated instruction based on students' reading levels. These new texts have helped bridge the gap and extend reading for some of my learners. \r\n\r\nRead Alouds: I regularly share engaging stories with the entire class, fostering a love for reading and modeling fluent reading. These books have added a new light and interesting turns during our read alouds. We are also able to expand our discussions to talk about new emotions, cultures, and experiences. \r\n\r\nThe new books have sparked the imaginations of all my students, but some are particularly enjoying specific aspects:\r\n\r\nStudents with strong phonological awareness are thriving with books that feature repetitive sounds and rhyming patterns, reinforcing their phonemic awareness skills (as outlined in the Illinois Learning Standards for Language Arts).\r\n\r\nStudents who excel in visual learning are captivated by books with vibrant illustrations, engaging in rich discussions about the pictures and how they relate to the story.\r\n\r\nLearners with SEL needs are finding comfort and support in books that address social-emotional themes. Reading stories about friendship, empathy, and managing emotions in healthy ways is helping them develop essential social-emotional skills.\r\n\r\nFurthermore, the new books have inspired several exciting project-based learning projects. Students have:\r\n\r\nCreated their own illustrated versions of their favorite stories.\r\nConducted research on the emotions presented in each book. \r\n\r\n\r\nThe impact of your generous donation extends far beyond the pages of these books. It has fostered a love for reading, cultivated essential literacy skills, and enriched the social and emotional learning experiences of all my students. Thank you again for your unwavering support of our young learners.","fullyFundedDate":1727966688854,"projectUrl":"project/art-of-curiosity/8499562/","projectTitle":"Art Of Curiosity","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Thiele","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-3_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9594684"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_29840","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":457,"numTeachers":32,"percentFrplEligible":30,"percentAsian":5,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":71,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":19,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"14.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":78.0,"schoolId":29840,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Spring Hills Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Spring Hills Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/illinois/roselle-school-district-12/spring-hills-elementary-school/29840"}
