In my 24 years of teaching, I have spent so much of my own money on resources for my learners, that I never thought about asking strangers for help. Maybe it is cultural- I am from Colombia- and, I never thought it was appropriate to ask, or if I would be supported. I was so wrong! \r\n\r\nLast year, I had the best student teacher! She is young, dedicated and caring. She told me that I should write a proposal to get books, an IPad, and tables for my classroom. She knew I needed new children' s books for my Spanish I & 2 classes, and new titles for my advanced courses. She also knew that the tall tables I had for kids who complain about back issues and those who prefer to stand while learning would benefit. She encouraged me to write the proposal and she edited it. She was so hopeful and excited that I agreed to do it, and felt really excited too. Fast forward to a few months and I was opening the boxes with my students.\r\n\r\nRight away my AP students picked their favorite \"I survived\" book to read. We would devote 15 minutes a day to read, learn vocabulary and discuss what happened in the stories. The children's books are used on Mondays on my Lunes Libro (Monday Book) portion of the day. I read to the students and we work on vocabulary. Some students have expressed how this reading time brings them memories from their childhood. In addition, some have mentioned how comforting it feels to be read aloud. In these times of technology overload and fast paced activities, stopping to read and connect as a group is one of the most relaxing activities we can do.\r\n \r\nJo and DaiKuan love the tall tables! Somedays they stand and other days they use stools. They feel special using the brand new tables. They don't complain much about their back pain anymore. \r\n\r\nThe IPad has been amazing to walk around, scan kids' work and record my voice for assignments and projects. Some of my students have used it when their chromebook is not charged or to record their own projects. \r\n\r\nThank you so much for making my classes better, my classroom more inviting and safe, and my teaching life easier!\r\n\r\nWith loving gratitude, \r\nMrs. Jaffe & her awesome learners!","fullyFundedDate":1743011328958,"projectUrl":"project/dive-deep-into-learning/8986066/","projectTitle":"Dive Deep Into Learning","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Jaffe","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3091894"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_3502","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":534,"numTeachers":43,"percentFrplEligible":66,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":6,"percentWhite":83,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":3,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"12.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":54.8,"schoolId":3502,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about South Stokes High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"South Stokes High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/north-carolina/stokes-county-school-district/south-stokes-high-school/3502"}
