As English Learners, my students often feel a sense of hesitation when approaching long-form texts, but this project has given them the \"permission\" to interact with the story physically. By using the highlighters to identify key details and the sticky notes to ask questions in real-time, they are learning the high-level skill of active interrogation of a text. They aren't just reading words; they are identifying themes of resilience and migration, and they are gaining the confidence to \"talk back\" to the author, a skill that is essential for college and career readiness.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading no longer looks like a group of students sitting silently with their heads down. Instead, it looks like a vibrant, hands-on workshop. You will see students leaning over their desks, debating which passage to highlight as \"evidence,\" and trading sticky notes with peers to share their predictions. The colored flags sticking out of their books serve as a visual trophy of their hard work and deep thinking. Because the students know they won't \"mess up\" the book by using sticky notes, the fear of making a mistake has been replaced by a hunger for discovery.\r\n\r\nThere is one small group of students in particular—all of whom have recently arrived in the country—who have found a special home in The Circuit. Because the story mirrors their own journeys of resilience, they have been incredibly motivated to master the vocabulary. I recently watched a student, who rarely spoke in class, fill an entire page with pink sticky notes because he was so excited to find \"connections\" between the main character's life and his own. Your generosity didn't just provide paper and ink; it provided a mirror in which my students can see their own potential and a window through which they can view a successful future.","fullyFundedDate":1759512985955,"projectUrl":"project/building-thoughtful-readers-one-book-at/9554068/","projectTitle":"Building Thoughtful Readers, One Book at a Time","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Ponce","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10161236_orig.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1757567209492","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10161236"},{"teacherId":7984167,"projectId":9712128,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for supporting my DonorsChoose project and helping provide additional graphing calculators for my classroom. We began planning on March 13, and by Monday, March 16, 130 freshmen had officially planted their seeds. The most popular choices were African Daisies, Lavender, Marigolds, and Sunflowers. \r\n\r\nStudents were monitoring their plants' growth over 10 days, a timeline adjusted to accommodate our upcoming Spring Break. After the seeds sprout, students took measurements of the growth and will graph their data to compare how different variables affected growth. One student even commented that it felt like the classroom was \"looking out for us, not just our grades.\"\r\n\r\nStudents are now using the sensory tools such as stress balls, fidget toys, breathing spheres, and tactile strips during moments when they feel overwhelmed or need help focusing. The breathing ball has become especially popular during short mindfulness breaks, where we practice breathing exercises before tests or presentations. The refrigerator has also allowed us to store water and snacks so students can stay hydrated and energized during long class periods.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, we are continuing to incorporate this space into our classroom routines as part of discussions about stress management, emotional awareness, and healthy coping strategies.
