I teach 9th grade students that have struggled in traditional reading classes. Using a class novel is a wonderful way to have a common text to analyze using a variety of reading standards. This particular novel is very engaging because of the intense conflict the main character must overcome. The parallel storyline also keeps learners curious while trying to identify the connection between the two settings. In addition, the theme of this novel compliments our curriculum which is entitled Promise and Progress.
