Early computer science instruction often relies heavily on screen time, but VEX123 has given our elementary students a hands-on, tactile gateway that builds both technical capability and foundational life skills.\r\n\r\nAcross grades K through 5, the impact on student learning and engagement has been amazing. I have shared some highlights of things that I have observed based upon specific grade levels.\r\n\r\nGrades K–1: Using the touch buttons directly on the robot, our youngest learners quickly grasp directional spatial reasoning and sequencing without needing a screen or reading proficiency.\r\n\r\nGrades 2–3: Students transition to physical Coder Cards, building visual logic chains. They learn to break down problems step-by-step and test their code in real time.\r\n\r\nGrades 4–5: Older students progress seamlessly into VEXcode 123, utilizing block coding to solve multi-step navigational challenges and storytelling prompts.\r\n\r\nBeyond learning, VEX 123 has fundamentally changed my classroom culture. When a student's code doesn't work as planned, \"debugging\" shifts the mindset from failure to discovery. Students eagerly collaborate, test hypotheses, and celebrate each other's trial-and-error progress. Additionally, this screen-free interactive learning has lowered the barrier to entry for diverse learners, ELL students, and early readers who thrive through kinesthetic problem-solving.\r\n\r\nThank you for supporting this initiative. Thank you for supporting my endeavors to promote the positive use of technology and robotics. Technology, specifically coding, plays a large role in much of what you see in everyday life. There are so many advantages for my students in this area. Coding requires logical reasoning and thinking, which can be applied in all aspects of learning. The hope is that the reasoning taught through coding and robotics transfers to these additional aspects of learning. I feel like I am making a difference, know these possibilities are available for for my students.\r\n\r\nThe Edison V3 robots are engaging and exciting to my students. They look forward to my class each week as we dive deeper into using our robots for specific coding tasks and challenges. My students love looking for new ways to improve upon and embellish their coding tasks. I love seeing the excitement on their faces when they find success.\r\n\r\nOne thing that I have noticed in robotics and coding, is that my special education students are very intuitive and creative in how they approach tasks. They find success and often exceed my expectations with the addition of details to their programming.
