These items have not only helped create a more welcoming and supportive environment, but they have also become essential tools in helping students regulate their emotions, find moments of calm, and feel safe and understood.\r\n\r\nThe addition of a well-equipped calming corner has already begun to make a difference in the lives of our students. Whether they're managing stress, processing emotions, or simply needing a quiet space to regroup, your donation has helped provide a haven where they feel seen and supported.\r\n\r\nThank you for believing in the importance of mental health and wellness in schools. Your support sends a powerful message to our students: that their well-being matters, and that they are surrounded by a caring community.","fullyFundedDate":1746787263550,"projectUrl":"project/creating-a-safe-space-my-first-school-c/9306510/","projectTitle":"Creating A Safe Space: My First School Counseling Office","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Griffin-Isler","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10010750_orig.png?crop=1837,1837,x0,y128&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1755520334553","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10010750"},{"teacherId":8913435,"projectId":7297344,"letterContent":"The materials I'm introducing—like whiteboards, markers, and other hands-on supplies—aren't traditional texts, but they open the door to important lessons in creativity, self-expression, collaboration, and critical thinking. By incorporating drawing, coloring, and interactive whiteboard activities, students build fine motor skills, learn how to visualize and organize their ideas, and strengthen their ability to communicate their understanding in creative ways. These materials also encourage mindfulness and focus, helping students relax while still engaging deeply in their learning.\r\n\r\nIn my classroom, reading is active, collaborative, and connected to creativity. Students don't just sit and read quietly (though we make space for that, too)—they also engage with texts by drawing scenes, summarizing stories with colorful visuals, and using whiteboards to map out characters, plot lines, and vocabulary. We balance traditional literacy skills with opportunities to interpret and express understanding through art and discussion, which helps all types of learners feel included and successful.\r\n\r\nI've noticed that students who typically struggle to stay engaged during traditional reading lessons light up when they can use the new materials to interact with what they're learning. For example, some of my more hands-on or visual learners are thriving when they get to sketch their ideas or show their thinking on whiteboards. It gives them a different pathway to comprehension and confidence. The freedom to express themselves creatively has made even my shyest students more willing to share their ideas and participate.","fullyFundedDate":1683868690430,"projectUrl":"project/ms-hammonds-library/7297344/","projectTitle":"Ms. Hammond's Library","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Hammond","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8913435_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1687714876741","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8913435"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_122205","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":null,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":46,"percentAsian":3,"percentBlack":43,"percentWhite":36,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":9,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Not specified","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR District Weighted Average","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"UNCLASSIFIED","ncesMetroType":null},"inStateSupporters":60.0,"schoolId":122205,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about SLAM Academy of Atlanta on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"SLAM Academy of Atlanta","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/georgia/georgia-department-of-education/slam-academy-of-atlanta/122205"}
