The story behind the project stems from an event in 1992 in which a cargo ship travelling from Hong Kong to Washington State encountered hurricane-like conditions and lost a number of its containers. Some of those containers were full of bath toys, including rubber ducks, turtles, frogs and beavers. The bath toys began floating around the ocean, and over time, they began washing up in various locations from Alaska to Hawaii to even areas in the Atlantic Ocean like Maine and the U.K. Once scientists knew where the ship lost the cargo, they could use the coordinates from where the toys washed ashore to learn more about ocean currents, including how long it takes to circulate in them. \r\n\r\nIn previous years, I gave students the coordinates and had them plot the locations on a map and answer questions. While effective in helping students understand more about the story and its impact on our knowledge of ocean currents, it wasn't very interesting. With your gift, students were able to mark the location of the shipping accident by placing a toy boat on a large table sized map. They were then able to place actual duck toys at the locations where they were found according to longitude and latitude. Finally, students made predictions about which ocean currents the toys would have taken to end up where they did. This version of the activity was much more interactive and allowed students to consider which specific ocean currents played a role in the movements of each duck. \r\n\r\nThank you again so much for your support!","fullyFundedDate":1729708601439,"projectUrl":"project/ducks-overboard/8756545/","projectTitle":"Ducks Overboard!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Frump","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp1038219_orig.jpg?crop=476,477,x0,y33&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1725980276516","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/1038219"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_46919","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":80,"numTeachers":6,"percentFrplEligible":41,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":9,"percentWhite":68,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":16,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"13.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":76.9,"schoolId":46919,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Richard O Jacobson Technical High School at Seminole on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Richard O Jacobson Technical High School at Seminole","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/florida/pinellas-county-schools/seminole-vocational-education-center/46919"}
