Many of them spend long hours in our college and career classroom working on applications, essays, and scholarship opportunities. Having snacks available—granola bars, fruit, and crackers—has helped ensure that students can stay energized and focused during these important moments. Something as simple as a quick snack has made it possible for students to power through an essay revision or complete a scholarship application without the distraction of hunger.\r\n\r\nWhen the snacks first arrived, students were genuinely excited and grateful. For some, it meant they didn't have to go through the school day hungry or worry about spending money they didn't have on food. I remember one student saying that having a snack helped them stay focused long enough to finish an application they had been putting off because they felt tired and overwhelmed. Small moments like this show how meeting basic needs can have a powerful effect on learning and motivation.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, students will continue using our classroom space to work on college applications, prepare for exams, and search for scholarships. Having access to snacks helps create a welcoming environment where students feel supported and able to stay engaged in their goals. Because of your generosity, our classroom is not only a place for academic work but also a space where students feel cared for and empowered to pursue their futures. This is our second technology project, and your continued generosity has allowed even more students to have reliable access to the tools they need for the college and career process. For many of my students, access to a dependable computer outside of school is limited, so these laptops make it possible for them to research colleges, complete applications, and apply for scholarships during class time.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, the laptops are used daily for navigating application portals, and organizing important materials for financial aid and scholarship submissions. School-operated laptops block students' email, which are needed for college application tools. Many donors use technology at home, but in a classroom like mine these devices become critical learning tools that help students practice real-world digital skills while working through one of the most important transitions of their lives.\r\n\r\nWhat excites students the most is the sense of independence the laptops provide. They are able to explore colleges on their own, compare financial aid options, and take ownership of their futures. I have already seen students grow more confident as they discover schools and scholarship opportunities they might not have found otherwise. Your support continues to remove barriers and brings my students one step closer to achieving their college goals. For many of them, reliable access to technology is not guaranteed outside of school, so having these laptops available in the classroom allows them to research colleges, complete applications, and apply for scholarships that make higher education financially possible.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, technology is more than just a tool—it is a gateway to opportunity. Students are using the laptops to draft, revise, and refine their college essays while receiving real-time feedback. They are also learning how to navigate application portals, organize important documents, and build the digital skills that colleges expect incoming students to have. This technology allows me to guide them step-by-step through a process that can otherwise feel overwhelming, ensuring that every student has the support and resources needed to submit strong applications.\r\n\r\nThe most exciting part for students has been the independence these laptops provide. They are able to explore colleges, compare financial aid options, and take ownership of their futures. I have seen several students who were initially unsure about their college options become more confident as they researched schools and discovered scholarship opportunities they did not know existed. Watching students realize that college is truly within reach has been one of the most powerful moments made possible by your support.\r\n\r\nBecause of you, my students are not just completing assignments—they are building the skills and confidence needed to pursue higher education and create new possibilities for their futures. Your generosity has made an immediate difference in our school day. Many of my students previously struggled to stay hydrated because the school's water fountains are outdated and the water is often undrinkable. Since receiving these resources, students are able to grab a bottle of water during class and remain focused on their work instead of worrying about thirst or needing to leave the building to purchase water.\r\n\r\nOne moment that stood out was the first day the water arrived. Students were genuinely surprised and grateful that people they had never met cared enough to support them. What might seem like a small resource quickly became something meaningful. Having access to clean water created a calmer classroom environment and helped students stay engaged during lessons and discussions. It also sparked conversations about health, equity, and how communities can come together to support one another.\r\n\r\nAs we continue our work this semester, students are focusing on collaborative projects and class discussions that require sustained attention and participation. That's how appreciated everything was.\r\n\r\nYou did more than send snacks — you gave my students a sense of care and stability. Rather than relying on automated apps or instant answers, students use calculators to actively work through real-world financial scenarios, such as analyzing college financial aid award letters, estimating out-of-pocket costs, and comparing loan and grant options. This hands-on approach strengthens numeracy, reinforces critical thinking, and builds financial literacy by requiring students to slow down, interpret information carefully, and take ownership of each calculation. The calculator serves as a bridge between abstract financial concepts and practical decision-making, allowing students to engage deeply without the distractions that often accompany unrestricted technology.\r\n\r\nWhat excites students most about this technology is its immediate relevance and independence. Calculators empower them to break down complex financial information on their own, making topics like tuition costs, scholarships, and aid packages feel manageable rather than overwhelming. Students who were initially hesitant about math or finance have especially warmed to this approach, gaining confidence as they see accurate results emerge from their own work. For many, using calculators to decode financial aid letters is a moment of clarity in which one that transforms college planning from a distant idea into a tangible, achievable goal.","fullyFundedDate":1758202657289,"projectUrl":"project/calculators-and-personal-finance-in-the/9692205/","projectTitle":"Calculators and Personal Finance in the Era of Tech-free Schools","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Rankine","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7880368_orig.jpg?crop=2992,2992,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1722956308496","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7880368"},{"teacherId":9786354,"projectId":9642796,"letterContent":"On behalf of the entire Yearbook Committee, I want to extend our heartfelt thanks for your generous donation in support of our school's yearbook. Because of your generosity, our classroom was filled with excitement when students first saw the pens, markers, chart paper, notebooks, and looseleaf materials. Their immediate reaction was enthusiasm and pride—students were eager to organize their ideas, share materials, and begin working together. We quickly put these resources to use through group collaborative writing protocols, where students worked in teams to brainstorm, draft, revise, and present their thinking on chart paper. One especially meaningful moment was watching students who are usually hesitant to participate take ownership of their ideas by writing, annotating, and contributing visually alongside their peers.\r\n\r\nThese materials have transformed the way we approach learning, making collaboration more structured, inclusive, and engaging. Students are now better prepared for ongoing lessons that require group analysis, peer feedback, and clear communication of ideas. Our next steps include expanding these collaborative writing strategies into longer projects, such as research-based responses and real-world problem-solving tasks, where students will continue using notebooks for reflection and chart paper to track collective thinking.
