We are using the new cage, bedding, food, water bottles, and enrichment toys as part of our daily routine, giving students hands-on experience caring for a living creature. Each week, students rotate through care duties such as feeding, refreshing water, and gently interacting with our guinea pig. One of the most powerful moments so far was watching a normally quiet student confidently explain the care routine to a classmate, proudly taking ownership of their role.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the materials and realized what they were for, their excitement was pure joy. There were gasps, big smiles, and so many thoughtful questions: What does guinea pigs like to eat? How do we know if it's happy? How should we hold it gently? Their natural curiosity and kindness immediately shone through, and they were eager to learn how to care for our new class pet responsibly and compassionately.\r\n\r\nThanks to you, students aren't just learning about animals—they're practicing empathy, patience, and teamwork in real time. Our next steps include tying our guinea pig into science lessons by observing behavior, learning about habitats and nutrition, and recording observations through drawings and writing. Students will continue building routines, asking questions, and reflecting on what it means to care for another living being.\r\n\r\nYour support truly gave our donors a peek into our classroom, and it has helped create a learning experience that reaches far beyond academics. Thank you for helping us foster responsibility, empathy, and curiosity in such a memorable way. 🐹💚","fullyFundedDate":1758636469403,"projectUrl":"project/classroom-pet-to-help-with-empathy/9419931/","projectTitle":"Classroom Pet to Help With Empathy","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Zimmerman","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7286507_orig.jpg?crop=716,716,x281,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1593199480326","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7286507"},{"teacherId":10030893,"projectId":9578130,"letterContent":"My students absolutely love having the guinea pigs in our classroom! The cage is perfect for giving the students easy access to care for them by giving them food, hay, and water. The students also are able to view the guinea pigs and observe their habits. The students could sit and watch them for hours! \r\n\r\nAdditional resources that I was able to get were drawers to organize all of the supplies for the guinea pigs. This way the students can know where everything is to be able to help me care for the guinea pigs. The class is so curious about Guinea pigs and their behavior, so the books have been a valuable resource to learn more about them! I can't say thank you enough for all the generous donations that allowed me to get much needed supplies to be able to keep the guinea pigs well cared for in my classroom!","fullyFundedDate":1755280367788,"projectUrl":"project/creature-comforts-bringing-cuddles-and/9578130/","projectTitle":"Creature Comforts: Bringing Cuddles and Joy to Our Classroom","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Lupia","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10030893_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1754963989113","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10030893"},{"teacherId":7286507,"projectId":9305750,"letterContent":"When our new guinea pigs arrived, the classroom was instantly filled with excitement and joy! The students gathered around their enclosure, eager to watch, pet, and learn about our new furry friends. We've been incorporating them into our science lessons, using daily observations to practice descriptive writing and learn about animal care, habitats, and responsibility. One special moment was when we brought our kindergarten buddies up to learn and see them Next, we plan to integrate the guinea pigs into a research project where students will create informational posters about guinea pig care, combining reading, writing, and art. These little animals have not only sparked curiosity but also created a sense of shared responsibility and community in our classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1746794978590,"projectUrl":"project/cuddles-and-curiosity-a-class-pet-to-in/9305750/","projectTitle":"Cuddles and Curiosity: A Class Pet to Inspire Young Hearts","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Zimmerman","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7286507_orig.jpg?crop=716,716,x281,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1593199480326","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7286507"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_88940","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":744,"numTeachers":48,"percentFrplEligible":38,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":3,"percentWhite":79,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":14,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 4","studentTeacherRatio":"15.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":92.3,"schoolId":88940,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Schuylkill Valley Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Schuylkill Valley Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/pennsylvania/schuylkill-valley-school-district/schuylkill-valley-elementary-school/88940"}
