Upon receiving the items, the students were more than overjoyed to be able to play with new toys and manipulatives. Every Friday they are able to play fun centers after their tests, and they look forward to it the most. They have really enjoyed using the items donated because they get to explore and express their imagination. We also use the items during after school, for those enrolled in the program, as they are able to use them with homework or to practice skills we are learning in class. We use the trace magnetic numbers and the red tracer to help with dexterity and writing. Many of my students are new to the school setting and need a lot of practice, therefore these items have helped with learning their numbers and alphabet, as well as with writing. \r\n\r\nOne of the biggest differences I have seen in the classroom are the students' collaboration and communication skills. The students play in small groups during fun centers, and I have seen them communicate more effectively- even those students who do not really talk in class, I have seen them express themselves through play. The students are able to share their ideas and connect with others by having thorough conversations and leadership skills. One of their favorite materials is the kinetic sand, they love the feel of it and love to role play as if they are having a party or are at the beach- it's quite funny and endearing to see. The city rug and accompanying cars and jobs have allowed them to explore who is in their community and how they play significant roles. \r\n\r\nThe next steps for my students are for them to learn letters c, n, i, and o, along with their sight words. I try different methods for them to learn their letters and numbers and most of it is rooted from art. My students absolutely love art, whether it is coloring, making crafts, or drawing-they love it all. I will hope to create a new project that will help them in learning their letters and sounds, and it including art of some form.\r\n\r\nThe resources sent to us have been a true blessing in helping the students learn and grow. They love to play with the materials as well as learn with them, as it makes learning new things more fun. It brightens up the days for those students who may never get to play at home or have never played with such items.
