Because November has conferences, Veterans Day, and Thanksgiving, we have few \"house meeting\" days (certain Mondays) to get things done. That meant that we had to take advantage of today for our kiddos to make their Christmas Ornament Crafts. The kids LOVED them. We had one kiddo new to our school this year who said, \"I've never done a craft like this before!\" This is one of my favorite teaching days because the kids get to make something special. That kiddo had a really hard time leaving his train at school but we assured him that he would get to take it home in time for Christmas. \r\n\r\nI meant to take pictures while the kids were making the ornaments, but it was HAPPY CHAOS with no time to snap pictures. The 4th grade made snow scenes in a jar, the 5th graders made Christmas trains from popsicle sticks, and the 6th graders made melted snowmen.\r\n\r\nI'll submit some pictures of a few of the finished ones. We have three teams...The Singing Salmon working to restore salmon habitat, The Baddie Beavers who are trying to come up with a safer way to trap and relocate beaver to places where they are needed. The bins are already being used by the students. They are now able to easily find the favorite books! The books you helped provide will play an important role in building my students' understanding of American history.\r\n\r\nWe won't be reading the new book until this winter because we need to build background knowledge for the students first. Our 5th grade standards span from exploration to the United States becoming a country, so we're taking a careful, scaffolded approach. We'll first read about an explorer to understand what drove people to the New World. Then we'll read about the Boston Tea Party to see the tensions building between the colonies and Britain. Only then will we be ready to read the book this project bought: I Survived the American Revolution, 1776. By the time students open this book, they'll have the context they need to truly understand the setting, the conflict, and why this moment in history mattered so much.\r\n\r\nReading in my class means all students have a book to follow along in. We take turns reading aloud, which helps build fluency and keeps everyone engaged. We pause to talk about vocabulary words and make sure everyone understands what's happening in the story. Since we're in the library, our focus is really on enjoying the story together. These read-alouds aren't about drilling comprehension questions—they're about building background knowledge that will give students a much deeper understanding when they study this content more formally in their social studies class.\r\n\r\nI know the students will absolutely enjoy this book because in past experience, students love learning about history through stories. The I Survived series brings history to life in a way that textbooks simply can't.
