This gift has had such a positive impact on my students and their learning. \r\n\r\nMy students were engaged from the beginning to the end of the novel. The plot really captured their attention. Even my most reluctant readers were eager to turn the page and find out what would happen next. \r\n\r\nThis book was especially beneficial for my struggling readers. The book is age-appropriate and also has a powerful storyline. As they worked through the chapters, I was able to watch their confidence grow. I saw measurable improvements int ehri fluency, comprehension and overall engagement. \r\n\r\nYour donation provided my students with a wonderful reading experience. We were able to have some very deep, meaningful conversations about responsibility, resilience, and personal growth-- lessons that extend far beyond reading skills. \r\n\r\nThank your so much for your generosity. Your gift truly made a difference in the lives of my students.","fullyFundedDate":1744207645309,"projectUrl":"project/engaging-novels-for-struggling-readers/9227122/","projectTitle":"Engaging Novels for Struggling Readers","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Reed","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-5_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9753829"},{"teacherId":9753829,"projectId":8792857,"letterContent":"I cannot express how thankful I am for your support in my classroom. My students were so excited when the box of books arrived and have been so engaged in the unit. The book has had a powerful impact on my students and has allowed for critical thinking and collaborative conversations.\r\n\r\nStudents learned about three different time periods in history: Nazi Germany, the Syrian Civil War and Cuba under Fidel Castro's rule. I was able to use nonfiction paired text with the novel to build background knowledge. The characters in the book are fictional but they are based off real events. \r\n\r\nOnce we finished reading the novel, I broke students up into small groups and had each group focus on one of the three storylines. They did research about the historical events and compared them to the fictional characters in Refugee. \r\n\r\nThe powerful themes in the book help students learn about empathy, social injustice and kindness. We were able to have some deep conversations about real world issues. \r\n\r\nThis is a unit I will be able to teach for years. The books you provided will be read year after year by the students in my district.
