Your generous donation provided our classroom with books that allowed students to explore earthquakes and one of the most significant events in the history of the city they call home—the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.\r\n\r\nThrough Magic Tree House: Earthquake in the Early Morning, I Survived: The San Francisco Earthquake, 1906, Keeper of the Light, and TIME for Kids: Earthquakes, my students were able to experience this topic through a variety of engaging texts. The combination of historical stories and informational texts helped students build background knowledge about earthquakes while also imagining what it may have been like to be a child living in San Francisco in 1906.\r\n\r\nThese books sparked wonderful conversations in our classroom. Students were especially excited to recognize familiar places and make connections between the San Francisco they know today and the city they were reading about. Instead of history feeling like something that happened far away, students began to understand that important historical events happened right here in their own community.\r\n\r\nThe books also gave us opportunities to strengthen important third-grade literacy skills. Students practiced identifying key details, comparing information across texts, using evidence to support their thinking, learning new vocabulary, and distinguishing between fictional stories and factual information. Reading several books about the same topic allowed students to deepen their understanding with each new text and make connections across our learning.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, these books helped nurture my students' curiosity about their own city. They learned not only about the destruction caused by the 1906 earthquake and fires, but also about resilience, rebuilding, and how San Francisco has changed over time. Seeing students become excited about the history of their own community has been one of the most meaningful outcomes of this project.\r\n\r\nThank you for giving my students the opportunity to become readers, researchers, and young San Francisco historians. With the people shapes, they created miniatures of themselves by drawing and using paper from our reuse bin to create their clothes.\r\n\r\nWe're currently working on writing Show and Tell books, so we are writing sentences on our lapboards.
