By stepping into the shoes of characters facing various challenges, my students developed a greater capacity for empathy, a key aspect of the IB Learner Profile attribute of being Caring. The stories also provided a safe space to discuss feelings, identify personal strengths, and explore strategies for managing emotions, fostering crucial aspects of their overall social-emotional development.\r\n\r\nEngaging in rich discussions about the stories encouraged my students to articulate their thoughts, listen actively to peers, and consider different perspectives. This strengthened their IB Learner Profile attributes of being Communicators and Principled, while also inspiring them to think critically about their own social challenges and brainstorm constructive solutions. Many of these stories also naturally sparked conversations around our IB Transdisciplinary Themes, such as \"Who We Are\" (identity and relationships) and \"How We Organize Ourselves\" (community and responsibility), making abstract concepts relatable and personal.\r\n\r\nThe read-alouds truly served as bridges – connecting my students to diverse experiences, to their own inner worlds, and to each other. The discussions sparked by these books have led to a more compassionate, understanding, and emotionally intelligent classroom community.
