Students are still enthusiastic about their bottles and love showing them off. They often point out how others outside their class have decorated theirs, comparing designs and taking pride in their own creations. The mirrors and microphones are helping us develop our ideas more efficiently because we are now able to audition ideas both in our rehearsal and performance spaces.\r\n\r\nWe have been using the mirrors to refine our dances, and using the microphones to improvise when developing our scenes. The students are taking complete ownership of this creative process! By seeing and hearing themselves, they are developing the criteria by which they are evaluating themselves, and uplifting each other as they see others giving their best. I am overwhelmed with joy watching students who are more reserved finding the confidence to dance, move, speak, and sing in dynamic ways. They are showing just how much potential they have by so quickly evaluating themselves to bring out their best achievement. \r\n\r\nMost importantly, our musicals are written in response to what messages we feel our community needs to experience. Being able to see and hear ourselves is helping us evaluate how well we are communicating the social and emotional learning ideas we are trying to convey. We cannot thank you enough for helping us on our journey toward our original spring musical. As we are currently developing the scenes, we are thinking about how to emphasize character identities and main actions through height and depth on our stage. This has allowed us to develop ideas while simultaneously staging whereas before our portable stage, we were only able to think about staging once our ideas were developed. This is making our creative process smoother and more intentional.\r\n\r\nThe platforms are currently in my general music classroom where we are developing our ideas for the musical. Because of your generosity, we are now able to frequently present ideas and rehearse as if we are on our main stage right in our classroom. I am always hoping for my students to own their learning, and to see them thinking as directors, playwrights, and producers right in our classroom gives me so much joy!\r\n\r\nI can now see that their behaviors when not on stage are embodying the same elevated behaviors I would see when they will be on stage performing their musical. They are now making more meaningful connections between process and product. Their ability to self-evaluate, reflect and refine, and identify next steps has risen and this is evidenced by their new attention to detail. Some students shared how they remember their parents or grandparents having a record player or CD's, and how they used to listen to it together. I also was able to share stories about how I listened to music while doing my homework or while looking at the lyrics to songs along with the music. The students and I were able to see each other as more than just musicians in a learning space. The stories our player sparked us to share helped us see ourselves as music lovers first!\r\n\r\nThat is one of my main goals as an educator is to help young people realize how music can be a continuous part of our lives from childhood to adulthood. A learning activity as simple as listening to a vinyl record and watching each other's reactions turned our classroom into our own bedrooms and living rooms. We became family and friends in a way that listening to music from a computer had never caused. Listening to music in differing ways has helped us connect with each other in what feels like much more of a mindful activity than the music and videos we experience on our LED boards. The player draws us in and minimizes distractions. We are loving that we can be present with the music and each other by sitting and laying by the player and just listening.\r\n\r\nIn the busy-ness of school schedules, routines, and transitions, we are so grateful to be able to have a space and moment to be music lovers first. And most importantly, this activity motivates us to want to learn more so that our listening experiences can be richer and more engaging. Instead, when my PreK and K students walked in the room, I had everything covered up. When we were discussing a performance for our families, the students asked where we would perform, and I let them know that we would eventually perform on our cafeteria stage. A student asked me how we could practice for that. When I turned off the main lights, turned on our new stage lights, and uncovered our stage, the kids gasped and cheered! One student said, \"we're like rock stars now!\"\r\n\r\nThey are our rock stars, and because of your generosity, they are now able to frequently present their ideas and rehearse as if they are on our main stage right in our classroom. Every student, even those who are normally who are more reserved, wanted to get up on our portable stage and perform. Every student felt that the stage was theirs. I am always hoping for my students to own their learning, and to see them performing as if in front of a large, live audience right in our classroom gave me so much joy! \r\n\r\nI can now see that their behaviors when not on stage are embodying the same elevated behaviors I see when they are on stage.
