Thanks to your support, 18 students joined me for a four-day learning retreat on Hurricane Island this June—a perfect way to wrap up our school year.\r\n\r\nDuring the first two days, guided by the island's educators, students explored a variety of ecosystems. They identified mosses, lichens, and trees in the forest, tested water samples from a freshwater pond, studied invertebrates and seaweeds, used quadrats and transects to investigate the intertidal zone, and even learned about scallop farming in the island's two-acre aquaculture field. With phones set aside, they sketched, took field notes, and used Polaroid cameras to capture the parts of each system that fascinated them most.\r\n\r\nOn the third day, students put their curiosity and creativity to work. Using materials funded by DonorsChoose—including wood-burning tools—they transformed driftwood walking sticks, gathered on an island hike, into artistic representations of the ecosystems they had studied. This task challenged them to express their scientific understanding in a new, more complex way. Some students collaborated in groups, while others worked independently, fully immersed in bringing their knowledge to life. The results were inspiring: sea glass fused to represent the sun, wood patterns burned to symbolize seaweed, and twine of varying colors woven to represent intertidal creatures. Each project reflected not only the science they learned but also the individuality of the student who created it.\r\n\r\nOn the final day, students presented their walking sticks to one another and to the island staff. Their confidence, creativity, and depth of understanding were remarkable. This truly interdisciplinary experience—blending science, art, and collaboration—was only possible because of your investment in this project.\r\n\r\nThank you for believing in my students and for giving them an opportunity they will never forget.","fullyFundedDate":1746043686213,"projectUrl":"project/island-insights-hands-on-learning-with/9258236/","projectTitle":"Island Insights: Hands-On Learning with Ecosystem-Inspired Walking Sticks","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Cross","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9488412_orig.jpg?crop=1728,1728,x864,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1710035329013","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9488412"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_65427","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":511,"numTeachers":46,"percentFrplEligible":51,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":92,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":3,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"11.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_REMOTE"},"inStateSupporters":55.0,"schoolId":65427,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Oceanside High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Oceanside High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/maine/rsu-13/rockland-dist-high-school/65427"}
