The House on Mango Street introduces students to poetic vignettes filled with powerful themes—identity, belonging, family, and the struggles and dreams of growing up. Through this novel, students will strengthen reading comprehension, explore figurative language, analyze character development, and learn how to write with voice and purpose.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading isn't just about decoding words—it's about dialogue, discovery, and connection. We often read together, pause to reflect, share our thoughts in small groups, and write responses that link the text to students' own lives. This kind of reading experience is especially important for my English learners and heritage Spanish speakers, many of whom will see themselves in the pages of this novel for the very first time.\r\n\r\nI'm already thinking about a few students who I know will thrive with this book. One student in particular, who's been shy about speaking up, lights up whenever we read stories that reflect her culture and community. I can't wait to see her grow more confident as we dive into Esperanza's world.\r\n\r\nThank you for believing in my students and making this dream possible. Your gift isn't just providing books—it's opening doors, inspiring voices, and sparking deeper learning. I'm so grateful.","fullyFundedDate":1744222756942,"projectUrl":"project/exploring-latinx-culture-through-the-hou/9242257/","projectTitle":"Exploring Latinx Culture Through The House on Mango Street","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Hoffmann","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp4751344_orig.jpg?crop=400,400,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1755654429361","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/hoffmannspanish1"},{"teacherId":9554261,"projectId":8419456,"letterContent":"My students very much appreciated the generous donation. We only read The Outsiders this semester and are planning on reading Restart next semester. Students read along as the audiobook played because students learn to read better if they hear the way unfamiliar words are pronounced. After the end of each chapter, they had the option to choose any reading strategy question I provided to help them remember what happened in the book and to practice skills to better their reading. Learning to read is an ongoing process that requires active engagement. \r\nOriginally, the final project was to be a novel bingo, but I wanted students to really reflect on the theme of choices and consequences which was the main reason for choosing these two books. They chose one of five characters in the book and explored what choices that character made, what consequences resulted, and how the students themselves could learn how choices come with consequences. \r\nI had several students who really loved this book and are excited to watch the movie version next week when their projects are finished. Even if there are not always immediate results with how certain teaching strategies help students grow and change, I believe these books will help them become better humans.
