Since I know that many of my students will never take another visual arts course, I see it as my duty to expose them to as many different types of media and art experiences as I can in the few years I have them. This project was not the norm so when I told my students we were making cupcakes they thought it was the same clay cupcakes that the 5th graders had made in the past. When I presented them with the cupcakes made of spray foam they were amazed but excited. \r\n\r\nThough I showed them many examples of cupcakes, some weren't sure what direction they wanted to go but others dove right in. The best part was when they got to put on the icing. When they saw the icing for the first time all of their eyes lit up and they got huge smiles on their faces. When I told them that it wasn't real icing, but drywall compound (I had to explain what that was), they were astonished. I had colored the compound and put it in pastry bags and they were so excited to get their hands on them. They were very impatient because they all wanted to be next. It was such a joy to see their creativity come out when they chose what colors they would use and how they would use them. Some didn't believe me when I told them the sprinkles were not real and I saw a few try to sneak a taste and found out they were plastic. \r\n\r\nAfter this, my students were able to understand that art didn't have to be paper, pencils, or even paint. They could create things that are not even considered art. This allowed their creativity and critical thinking to grow. This experience will be something they will always remember and they walk away with a piece of art to treasure as well. I put them on display but get asked daily when they can take them home. I think I enjoyed this project as much as them if not more. I cannot thank you enough.","fullyFundedDate":1712084616982,"projectUrl":"project/who-doesnt-love-cupcakes-our-art-class/8080893/","projectTitle":"Who Doesn't Love Cupcakes?
