I recently received my master's degree in Education with an Emphasis in World Languages. The most recent peer-reviewed research demonstrates that using the language in \"real time\" or as close as possible to an immersive type of situation is what results in actual student fluency. I don't want my students to graduate high school and say \"I had 2-4 years of Spanish, but can't speak it!\" That is devastating, in my opinion! So in my classroom, we USE the language to communicate 75%-100% of the time in class. When they first come in to class, they respond to a prompt at their table with their peers. At least half the time, I ask them to hit \"record\" on their computer and record the group conversation. If they read a news article, they hit \"record\" and communicate about it with their table. Then we have a class debate. Other times when they come in, we just talk in Spanish, and at times it can reach 30 minutes to an hour of speaking in the target language about whatever our current unit entails: food, shopping, buying clothes, what they are doing outside of school, etc. This is \"real life\" speaking and we are doing it! The computers are a crucial aspect of feeling motivated to speak. When students hit \"record,\" they know they are \"on,\" but it's so much less pressure than having a teacher in front of you! Their computers act up at times, and some students' computers refuse to cooperate with some of our lesson technology. This is where your lovely computer you donated to my classroom hops to life and allows that student to still participate in the technology-assisted activity, recording activity, etc., whereas in the past they have either sat out, used paper, or just not been able to record/participate. Thank you so much for providing this \"edge up\" to the world languages classroom experience. It flows so much smoother now that I have a completely functional in-class computer they can use on the spot at any time. No more tears; no more frustration; 100% participation, and great results.
