The premise was that students think better -- and think more -- if they're standing up and writing on a vertical, non-permanent surface. The double-sided whiteboard that I was so lucky to receive has helped transform our math lessons, with students now standing at whiteboards in groups of 2-3, working together and learning from each other to solve problems and figure out new concepts (with me as a facilitator in their learning versus standing in front of the room teaching them everything).\r\n\r\nThis new way of learning has transformed my students into active, engaged thinkers who persevere through difficult tasks. They come in excited for math each day, eager to work together to solve real-world problems. This has been a game-changer for us, and your generousity helped this come to life by giving us the tools to create small group work stations for teams to work, think, learn, and become confident mathematicians. Your donation helped fund such tools as gum, putty, and weighted lap blankets/stuffed animals for our classroom. These weighted items are cute and inviting and very cuddly. EVERYONE wants a turn with them, because they are soft and soothing and provide the sensory input that allows even my most vulnerable learners to better stay on task and work alongside their peers. The light compression provides a calming effect that benefits every learner, and I love having enough of them (3 total were funded) so that everyone can have a turn. Best of all, they are completely machine washable so I can use them for years to come. All of these sensory tools help foster independence and allow my students to be more in control of their bodies, and ultimately more successful navigating their school day.
