They generated inquiry questions including: Why are people of different races treated poorly? How can art heal? How do people survive hard times? \r\n\r\n\r\nStudents have started to explore these questions in \"Punching the Air\" by Ibi Zoboi and Yusef Salaam. They have found me outside of class to share how much they are enjoying the book and several have said they find it relevant. We carry high-caseloads and are faced with demanding work including mounds of paperwork and little to no planning time. These materials have helped stream-line my work with general education teachers so that the vocabulary strategies such as learning pre-fixes and suffixes will help our students learn academic content.\r\n\r\n\r\nMy students need a thorough understanding of vocabulary across all academic subjects that is free of gender/racial bias. Our old vocabulary materials are out-dated and not equitable! The vocabulary books I received through Donor's Choose have helped level the playing field for students coming from a variety of backgrounds. These materials have impacted all my Speech/Language students across subjects. I cannot effectively teach 1-2 vocabulary words from every high school core content class. Students are likely not going to need to use the terms; demography, coup de'etat, or human development index more than a few times during a social studies class. Instead, students need to learn vocabulary by studying pre-fixes and suffixes in order to broaden their academic knowledge across settings and subjects. These materials have also helped progress monitoring to know that vocabulary interventions are successful.","fullyFundedDate":1727462653304,"projectUrl":"project/vocabulary-is-key-to-students-performan/8566755/","projectTitle":"Vocabulary Is Key to Students’ Performance!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Darcy","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8789924_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1669689537945","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8789924"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_50053","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":2078,"numTeachers":105,"percentFrplEligible":81,"percentAsian":4,"percentBlack":20,"percentWhite":16,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":49,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"19.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":52.8,"schoolId":50053,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Rangeview High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Rangeview High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/colorado/aurora-public-school-district/rangeview-high-school/50053"}
