The new folders, dividers, pens, and pencils have made it easier for students to manage their materials and stay prepared for both English Language Arts and Social Studies lessons. Our bulletin boards, newly decorated with the colorful borders and vibrant Better Than Paper roll, now display student essays, reading reflections, and academic goals in a way that motivates them to take pride in their work. These updated materials have given our classroom a clean, cheerful look that helps students focus, stay organized, and feel ready to learn.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the new supplies, they were so excited to help set everything up. One group immediately volunteered to organize the folders and pencils into our writing stations, while others helped decorate our reading wall with the new bird-and-flower border. They loved that the classroom felt \"brand new,\" and several mentioned that it made them feel like \"real middle schoolers\" ready to take ownership of their learning space. Even small additions—like bright dot stickers and neatly labeled binders—have made a big difference in how students keep track of assignments and showcase their writing progress.\r\n\r\nThese materials have also allowed me to strengthen classroom routines and reinforce responsibility. Students now manage their own writing folders and learning portfolios, using the dividers and pencils to draft, edit, and track their ELA progress across each unit. The improved organization has helped them take more pride in their work and develop stronger independent study habits. As we move into our next unit on informational writing, these resources will continue to support student engagement and accountability. The certificates, foil seals, and award supplies you helped fund have allowed us to create professional, elegant recognition pieces that celebrate student achievement across every subject area—from Reading and ELA to Math, Science, and Social Studies. We've been using these materials to host our monthly \"Celebration of Excellence,\" where students are recognized not just for grades, but for effort, growth, and character. Each student proudly receives a personalized certificate sealed with gold foil, and the look of pride on their faces says everything.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the new certificate holders and seals, they were amazed that their awards looked \"official—like real diplomas.\" One student even said, \"It feels like we're graduating every time!\" That sense of excitement and pride has inspired them to set new goals and encourage one another to keep improving. Something as simple as a certificate has become a big motivator in our classroom—students are learning that effort and consistency are just as worthy of celebration as test scores.\r\n\r\nWe're now using the awards to close each instructional unit, connecting academic mastery with personal growth. Our next step is to have students design their own \"Achievement Wall,\" where they'll display their certificates and write short reflections about what each one represents. With the Harry Potter series, the MARCH graphic novel trilogy, and the Percy Jackson and the Olympians collection, we're not just filling shelves—we're building real reading lives. These books let me teach big, transferable skills in authentic ways. Harry Potter gives us rich opportunities to examine theme, characterization, symbolism, and how tone and mood develop across chapters. MARCH invites students to read images and words together, analyze how layout and sequencing shape meaning, and connect historical narration to point of view and rhetoric. Percy Jackson opens the door to mythological allusions, conflict and resolution, figurative language, and the structure of the hero's journey, all while pushing students to infer and justify their thinking with text evidence.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading begins with a short mini-lesson that targets a specific skill—like tracking a character's changing motivation or noticing how a panel transition alters pacing—followed by independent reading or book clubs where students practice that skill right away. You'd see readers' notebooks open, sticky notes flagging claims and evidence, and small groups using discussion stems to push each other's ideas. We close with quick exit tickets, brief book talks, or Socratic seminars so students can name what they learned and set a purpose for the next day. It's quiet when it needs to be, and joyfully noisy when a student discovers a passage that \"changes everything.\"\r\n\r\nI'm already seeing particular students flourish with these texts. A reluctant reader who rarely finished a chapter is flying through MARCH; the visuals anchor the timeline and key figures, and he now volunteers to explain how one panel shifts the emotional impact of a scene. A mythology-loving student has blossomed with Percy Jackson; she built her own hero's-journey tracker and now coaches her group on recognizing thresholds, trials, and mentors. An English learner who struggled with dense prose found confidence by pairing the audio and print versions of Harry Potter after starting with MARCH; she now independently pulls quotes to support claims about courage and loyalty. A high-flyer is mapping recurring images across the Harry Potter books—light and dark, mirrors, names—and connecting them to character growth over time.\r\n\r\nBecause of your generosity, reading in our room is not an assignment; it's a habit, a conversation, and for some students a brand-new identity: reader. Thank you for believing in our kids and for giving them stories that teach skills, grow empathy, and open doors. Your investment is changing what students think they can do—and who they think they can become.","fullyFundedDate":1744943416277,"projectUrl":"project/books-are-students-passport-to-the-wor/9236981/","projectTitle":"\"Books Are Students' Passport to the World\"","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Thomas","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp4415864_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1720462471942","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/teacheroftheyearagain"},{"teacherId":4415864,"projectId":9200407,"letterContent":"First of all, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for donating and funding this project for my classroom. I formed an assembly line inside the classroom—one table for salty, one for sweet, one for protein, and one for hydration—then quality-checked, counted, and packed each bag. My favorite moment: when two students created a \"calm kit\" add-in (pep talk card + peppermint) and led a quick demo on how to breathe, read the card, and reset before the test. It was student-led, organized, and purposeful—exactly the confidence booster my students needed and wanted.\r\n\r\nThis project was pure excitement for my students! You should've heard the \"Whoa, people got all this for us?\" and \"We're really going to ace it now.\" Several students immediately started helping to sort by allergy-safe options. A few who are usually quiet volunteered to be \"inventory captains,\" scanning the snacks as they went into the bags and making sure every classmate's bag had a balanced mix. It turned into a leadership moment for many of them.\r\n\r\nThe next steps for my students will be to continue to support them with any supplies they need to be successful in the classroom. These headphones definitely help those students with their comprehension. In addition, the students have independent work assigned to them where they have to watch a video and answer questions throughout the video. This has helped my students be successful this year. They were so estatic to find out the classroom finally received a pencil sharpener because we desparately needed one. The manilla folders have been a huge lifesaver this year as well for my students. We have used the folders to create data folders, so that students can have conferences with the teacher and their parents discussing their academic data on benchmarks, weekly assessments, and diagnostics. In addition, the folders were used as Reading logs when students read books and needed to track how many pages they read. The students created writing folders to keep their writing resources all in one place. That has truly helped my students become better writers this year. The file cabinet has been a big help for me because I now have a place to store all my confidential files. The hanging folders make it even easier to organize my folders in my file cabinet. The students were able to use the dividers to organize their Social Studies notebooks, so that they could easily keep up with all their notes for Social Studies.
