Because of your generosity, students now have access to the Chomp Saw and has completely expanded they way they create, design, and learn through art. Their art has shifted from using paper as their canvas, to using cardboard, fabric, and foam. The chomp saw has made these new materials easy to cut and students have grown independent and confident with using it to create. \r\n\r\nBefore the ChompSaw, students were limited to using and cutting paper to create their projects, as using scissor presented a challenge for my young student who are just developing their fine motor skills. Cutting materials that were strong, like cardboard and fabric, required direct adult support. Now, with the chomp saw, students independently cut their cardboard, opening the door to more possibilities with their creations. Although students are still learning the ins and outs of the chomp saw, they have truly mastered straight cuts. They are now able to independently cut through a larger piece of cardboard to cut themselves a smaller piece of cardboard on which they can create their art. \r\n\r\nWe have used the chomp saw to create several art activities as seen in the photos. We began by using cardboard to create our thank you card. We followed it up with using pieces of cardboard that students cut into squares to weave with cleaners. We also used toiled paper rolls to cut using the ChompSaw to create are 3D sculptures. We cus small pieces of cardboard and fabric to add decorations to our gingerbread house, and we have began adding pieces of cardboard and other recycled materials to our recycle wall. \r\n\r\nIn the near future, we plan to use the chomp saw to enhance our engineering skills. We want to expand by using cardboard for more than just a flat surface for art. Our goal is to use the pieces we cut to create collaborative 3D pieces of work. I hope that these upcoming projects to promote the use of collaborative, critical, and problem solving to create 3D cardboard art with adult support and guidance. I understand that this goal will be a lot of trial and error, even for me, as I haven't fully mastered how to use the chomp saw myself. \r\n\r\nThank you once again. Your donation has given my students access to independence and diversity with materials. Students who would never visit the art area, visit it now because the chomp saw has inspired them to create. Families have also shown their support by donated cardboard boxes for student to cut into smaller pieces. Thank you for helping me create a classroom where student feel empowered, creator and capable.","fullyFundedDate":1756321455228,"projectUrl":"project/from-cardboard-to-art/9531677/","projectTitle":"From Cardboard to Art","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Castellanos","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9522806"},{"teacherId":9062274,"projectId":8729736,"letterContent":"I cannot thank you enough for your kindness and generosity in making our new classroom bookcases a reality! Since their arrival, our library has completely transformed. The students are now able to see the covers of all our books, making it easier and more exciting for them to find stories that spark their interest. The top display shelf has been a wonderful way to highlight seasonal books and those related to our lessons, drawing students in and encouraging them to explore new topics.\r\n\r\nThe impact has been greater than I ever imagined! My students love our library so much that I had to implement a library pass system because so many of them wanted to browse at the same time. Seeing their enthusiasm for reading grow each day has been truly heartwarming. These bookcases have not only brought organization to our library but have also created a space where students feel inspired to read. As many of you know, many students need a lot of support with the social-emotional aspects in life. So many of them don't have the skills to problem solve when big feelings arise. We have been using the thumbballs in my classroom during our morning meeting for a few months now. I'll start off by saying the students absolutely love when I pull them out. I've been using them during our morning meetings a few times per week so that we can work on the skills required in life prior to getting into those big feelings. \r\n\r\nWe have played with the balls a number of ways. Students answer the question one of their thumbs land on, they will call on another student to answer the question, and I have had a few students request to act out various scenarios. I have really seen a change in my classroom community. Students appear to have more respect for one another and are respectfully listening to others as they share their thoughts on a certain question. When students respond to a question, (and it's a common issue a lot of students have experienced) many students wish to answer the same question as well. This always provides students with the opportunity to hear other's ideas on how to handle or respond to a situation. \r\n\r\nI am really looking forward to the continued use of these social-emotional balls and their impact in my classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1735847867895,"projectUrl":"project/social-emotional-learning-with-thumbball/8754431/","projectTitle":"Social Emotional Learning With Thumbballs","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Davis","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3954964_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1726012052613","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3954964"},{"teacherId":9717867,"projectId":8721386,"letterContent":"Thank you for generously contributing to my project for my special education students. I have taught for over 30 years and the last 24 years have been as an RSP teacher. I strive to help my students to be fully included in the general education classroom. Several of my students with autism have significant behaviors that can impact their ability to maintain appropriate behavior in the general education classroom when they are feeling overwhelmed. \r\n I purchased the weighted blanket in a medium size so that students of many different ages could utilize it. It has been a huge hit, many autistic students find that is comforting to them when they are upset and will request to use it. The student in the picture had just had a pretty significant melt down in his general education classroom and came with me to de-escalate. His parents have purchased the exact weighted blanket for him to keep with him in class as it helps him so much. Upon entering my class he immediately asked for my blanket and upon laying it across his lap he become much more calm and put his head down to relax. After resting for a few minutes he wanted to try out the fidget toy and squishy, which seemed to put him at ease and shortly there afterward was able to discuss with me what he triggered him in the class. He and many other autistic students have z sensory stickers attached to their desks so that they can rub it when feeling upset. The course texture is soothing to them.\r\n I also have students that ask to use the wiggle seat when they are having trouble maintaining focus in class. I have found that students with ADD/ADHD are able to focus better when they are doing something with their hands while listening to a lesson, therefore many of my students will hold and squeeze the squishy toy and/or the putty during instruction. \r\n Most children respond well to positive reinforcement and therefore the various stickers and bouncy balls help to reward on task behaviors. The scratch and sniff stickers are especially popular. \r\n Thank you again for your support of the unique needs of my special education students.","fullyFundedDate":1725547974027,"projectUrl":"project/fun-sensory-items-and-positive-reinforce/8721386/","projectTitle":"Fun Sensory Items and Positive Reinforcement Items","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Marvin-Mickelson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9717867"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_54654","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":907,"numTeachers":27,"percentFrplEligible":53,"percentAsian":4,"percentBlack":10,"percentWhite":21,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":57,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"33.6:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":69.1,"schoolId":54654,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Rancho Vista Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Rancho Vista Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/westside-union-school-district/rancho-vista-elementary-school/54654"}
