I took this course because I was told I would have autistic students in my classes enrolled in the NEST program. The high school classroom, and overall high school environment, is overwhelming and overstimulating to most students. After learning more about common triggers for the incoming NEST students, I felt like I needed a safe place for the kids to escape the chaos. I started to look into items to create my Cozy Corner and reached out to my school to see if I would be reimbursed. Unfortunately, the NYC DOE \"teacher's choice\" program doesn't cover furniture or decor. That's when I decided to look into Donors Choose.\r\n\r\nThe process was simple and I was able to ask for everything I wanted. Once I received all my pieces and put my corner together, which I call \"Paws and Relax\" since I am an animal lover, my students (NEST and non-NEST) were so excited. I even had past students come in to check it out. My students utilize the corner daily, sometimes just to sit and take a breather from the day and others go there to read. The fidgets are used ALL THE TIME! Students take them to keep their hands busy at their desks. Also, the foot fidget is used often too; it helps anxious kids the most. \r\n\r\nI truly appreciate your help in making this thought a reality. As an automotive engineering and STEM teacher, I can't tell you how powerful it is for my students to see their designs, posters, and resumes come to life in full color. Many of my students come from underserved backgrounds and don't have access to color printing at home, so this tool helps level the playing field and makes their work feel truly professional.\r\n\r\nSince the printer arrived, students have been using it to scan diagnostic worksheets, print safety posters for our automotive shop, and design flyers for our solar car racing team, Seagull Solar. Having high-quality color printing available in the classroom means they can immediately visualize wiring diagrams, label components, and create outreach materials that represent their work with pride. The excitement in the room the first time they printed out their own car designs in color was incredible — it made their engineering projects feel real.\r\n\r\n\r\nThe ability to scan and copy has also streamlined our workflow. Students can now digitize their handwritten lab sheets and diagrams, share them with teammates, and reflect on their progress. It's helped foster collaboration, organization, and a sense of ownership over their learning process. What was once a bottleneck — waiting for a single black-and-white printer in another office — is now an efficient, creative hub right in our classroom.\r\n\r\nYour contribution didn't just provide a printer — it provided visibility, professionalism, and pride for my students' hard work. Thank you for believing in them, for investing in their creativity, and for helping us print a brighter future.","fullyFundedDate":1760922232527,"projectUrl":"project/printing-in-color-bringing-our-projects/9791459/","projectTitle":"Printing in Color: Bringing Our Projects to Life","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Smolka","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp5060190_272x272.png?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1514139814254","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5060190"},{"teacherId":5948247,"projectId":6766327,"letterContent":"When our new community-building games arrived, excitement buzzed through the classroom. My students couldn't wait to open the boxes and explore the new materials. Their eyes lit up as they pulled out board games, team-building activities, and collaborative puzzles. From the very first day, we've been using these resources to foster stronger connections among students while teaching critical social-emotional skills. One of our favorite activities so far has been a cooperative game that requires students to strategize and solve challenges together—perfect for promoting teamwork and communication.\r\n\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we're planning a \"Community Challenge Week,\" where small student teams will rotate through different stations using the donated games. They'll reflect on what collaboration looks like and how they can apply these skills outside the classroom. These activities are laying the foundation for a more connected and empathetic classroom culture—thank you for giving us the tools to make that possible.","fullyFundedDate":1662217100136,"projectUrl":"project/working-together-to-build-community/6766327/","projectTitle":"Working Together to Build Community","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Padula","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5948247_orig.jpg?crop=351,351,x258,y189&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1661460214895","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5948247"},{"teacherId":428438,"projectId":8980022,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for donating these graphic novels to our classroom.
