Our students have complex communication needs and the Smart board allows for them to build their communication skills while having fun! The students respond very well to digital learning materials and communication systems. I am able to use the Smart board to give them access to many digital books and learning materials. I also use it to make special school events into learning opportunities. For example, during our school holiday party, my colleague and I set up an ice cream stand for them to enjoy. The Smart board was utilized during this activity. We created a digital ice cream sundae builder, which allowed the students to make a picture of an ice cream sundae, which then would be made into a real ice cream sundae that they could enjoy! Along side the digital ice cream sundae activity, a digital communication board was provided that they could use to make requests, such as \"I want vanilla ice cream\". The students had a blast using the Smart board to request and build their ice cream sundae while improving on their communication skills! It allowed them to communicate exactly what they wanted independently, which is often a significant challenge for them. The Smart board turns simple activities into robust and fun learning opportunities. \r\n\r\n The Smart board allows me to present digital materials in an exciting and accessible way, which allows my students to improve on communication skills such as greeting, labeling, requesting, commenting, asking and answering questions, gaining attention, understanding and using basic concepts, sentence formulation, following directions, and much more! \r\n \r\nMany of our students use assistive technology for communication, including tablet-based robust communication applications. The Smart board allows for a highly motivating way for our students to practice using their communication devices to improve their communication skills. I have already seen so much growth in their engagement during speech therapy sessions and therefore a great improvement in their communication skills. The Smart board will be an amazing tool for our students for many years to come; it has already proven so beneficial in just a short time! Our students have complex communication needs and my colleagues and I have created a music program for them that allows for them to build their communication skills while having fun! We have created a Joint Action Routine where each student has a specific job during the music session. For example, one student will have the job of asking their peers which instrument they would like, and their peers must use their preferred methods of communication to ask for an instrument. Another peer has the job of telling their peers that the instruments are \"finished\" and collecting the instruments. All students have the same job every music session, which allows for them to eventually master that communication skill. Joint Action Routines allow our students to improve of communication skills such as greeting, labeling, requesting, commenting, asking and answering questions, gaining attention, understanding and using basic concepts, sentence formulation, following directions, and much more! We work on specific concepts such as quiet/loud, fast/slow, and following action directions such as \"play\" \"march\" \"dance\" \"shake\" and \"tap\". \r\nMany of our students use assistive technology for communication, including tablet-based robust communication applications. The music sessions allow for our students to practice using their communication devices to improve their communication skills. The music sessions have been extremely motivating for our students and we've already seen so much growth in their communication skills.
