Making Muppets with 10 boys, ages 9-11 years old, was not something that I thought was possible, but thanks to you all it was. \r\n\r\n When the fabric arrived, they were so excited! The joy was electric. We talked about how to lay out pattern pieces and the boys got to work tracing their pieces out. Then the real work began, the boys learned how to pin their pieces together and started sewing the puppet bodies. At first the switch from practicing sewing on lacing boards to actual fabric was tough for many of them, but they persisted. The students who were really struggling came to me for one-on-one lessons and eventually things started to click. The boys worked hard during every class and many asked if they could come in to work on their puppets in their free time. \r\n\r\nAs they built their puppets, they gained confidence in their sewing, and I saw that confidence spread to other places. It took two months, but every student had created a beautiful hand and rod style puppet. This project and the ten students who participated will probably go down as one of my favorite things I have ever taught. Every student grew, some in ways that I hadn't expected, and it helped me to grow as an artist too. \r\n\r\nSince finishing the puppets, one of the kids has brought his puppet back to school every day. Yesterday when he saw me in the hall, he thanked me for teaching him how to make puppets.
