In the heart of Brooklyn—surrounded by skyscrapers, subways, and sidewalks—it's easy to overlook the incredible ecosystems thriving right in our own backyard. Students are conducting hands-on experiments with soil, tracking plant growth over time, and investigating the biodiversity of urban life. These experiences are helping them think and work like real scientists.\r\nEach year, our fifth graders also visit the Newtown Creek Alliance to learn about the history of the Greenpoint oil spill—one of the largest land-based oil spills in U.S. history—and the ongoing environmental efforts to restore and protect the area.
