Inside the box was a simple glass fish tank. No frills. Just glass. As we dug deeper into the box and started to fill the tank it suddenly became a beautiful crisp habitat for our future class pet. It took us a while to get the water to maintain the exact temperature to house fish safely. \r\nEveryday the children and visitors visit the tank to see what is happening inside. When we return from spring break will will finally have our classroom's Discovery center\r\nComplete. Although the beauty is there and the relaxing sound of the water moving is constant the children will be taking care of a fish very soon. The foam shapes were perfect for details on houses. The children love cleaning in dramatic play and the toy vacuum comes in handy. The children love using stickers to detail their art work. Stickers are also great for fine motor. Chalk is used at recess; the children love drawing pictures on the ground outside in the playground. Play doh is used very often as well but dries out quickly. We use it for fine motor, letters and numbers. These experiences are helping them think and work like real scientists.\r\nEach year, our fifth graders also visit the Newtown Creek Alliance to learn about the history of the Greenpoint oil spill—one of the largest land-based oil spills in U.S. history—and the ongoing environmental efforts to restore and protect the area.
